Yetta G Kurland is an empowered and exciting face in New York City politics; her years of success and striving is somewhat muted by recent New York City Council decisions to extend term limits indefinitely,

against a more than 90% opposition to the move by New York City residents. Yetta Kurland is fed up and won't stand for it any longer. On January 14th she and likeminded individuals are taking to the streets in support of Yetta Kurland's 2009 City Council seat in what's been billed "Take Back the City: A Night of Performance & Celebration in Support of Yetta Kurland for City Council 2009."

While some just roll onto the scene with a velour-clad army of talking head graduate students, Yetta Kurland has more modest beginnings for sure. A leader in progressive politics at a progressive time in our nation's history, Yetta Kurland has been fighting for the rights of progressives as well as for overall social justice for more than two decades.

The report card on Yetta Kurland reads like a venerable who's-who of community movements and community based initiatives including judicial and legislative advocacy for civil rights, education, art, culture, affordable housing, employment rights, health care issues, and so much more.

As noted, Yetta Kurland has her roots in the social welfare of New Yorkers through her own story. Beginning in education as a teacher, Yetta Kurland founded a "language arts school," in her early 20's. Yetta Kurland also has worked to create and maintain sustainable and affordable housing solutions for New Yorkers for nearly as long. Yetta Kurland worked closely with tenants who were in ongoing eviction proceedings and has fought hard to protect those who rely on things like rent stabilization and rent control in New York City.

Yetta Kurland has been providing legal services to underrepresented communities, has fought to protect workers in private companies as well as those working for New York City, she's also worked on a New York City and New York State level to help legislate for important issues like safety and education, free speech rights, due process rights, and assembly rights.
