Diablo Cody + Showtime = Amazing Television
Showtime has been kicking tail and taking names with their original programming the past few years. I am predicting this year to be no different.
The network is set to release the sitcom "United States of Tara", a sitcom developed by Steven Spielberg and written by award winning writer Diablo Cody. (Cody is known for having written the screenplay for the 2007 film
Juno)
United States of Tara is a dark comedy featuring Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine/The Sixth Sense) and John Corbett. (Sex and the City/Northern Exposure) The show revolves around Tara, a mural artist that is like any typical working mother and wife..Only Tara suffers from multiple personalities.
The pilot episode introduces Tara, (Toni Collette) as well as her three "alters" (alternate personalities). One presents herself as a promiscuous party loving teenager who calls herself "T", one is a Donna Reed knockoff straight out 1950's suburbia named "Alice", and lastly there is "Buck". Buck reminds me of Charlene Theron's portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornous in the film Monster...only Buck is said to be a man. A man missing his "maleness" if you will.... The story line claims that it was lost in Vietnam.
Corbett plays Max, Tara's supportive and loving husband.
Diablo Cody's style is very apparent, and for those of you that appreciate her GenX savy United States of Tara is right up your alley. It is edgy, funny, and current.
The pilot episode was well written, the characters were written well, and the casting was great. I think that the only thing that could possibly harm the show is the subject matter.
