Preview of Spring '07 LineIt may be enough for some designers to simply cut a beautiful jacket or drape a lovely fabric. But Savania Davies-Keiller and Robert Crivello of DDCLAB are motivated to explore the more creative side of the business - including hi-tech and eco - to see how it can enhance life.
"It may be simple as easy-care fabrics or technology that's protective, said Savania. For the design duo that meant branching out from anti-radiation pockets to complete jackets made out of fibers woven with inox (steel) and stretch for a breathable, stretchable fabric that's undetectable. While their hi-tech pursuits garner the most attention - primarily because so few designers are doing it - they also explore eco-friendly materials. Savania says they were the first to use soy and corn for sweaters; the designers also do organic cotton jeans.

They are also looking at using spider webs as a thread. "We are extremely creative," she said. Consumers, Savania said, are looking for something less mass, things that show individuality. "They are looking for something with a thought behind it," she said. While other designers may be chasing trends and watching each other, Savania looks to modern masters of design like John Galliano who she calls a "real showman" to Jean Paul Gaultier ("He really is marching to his own passion," she said.)
Francois Girbaud pushes the envelope, she said. "He's extremely inquisitive with techno, shape, forcing the fabric to do something."
Big brands aren't the only ones unwilling to experiment with fashion. Savania cited a changing fashion climate with the way design grads present their books. "Ten years ago kids would come in with books; they were exciting...crazy stuff," she said. "Now they're clean and safe. I would like to change that."
After almost 15 years together, Savania calls partner Robert "brilliant." They cite their inspirations as art, music and architecture.
