Mamma Mia: A DVD Movie Review

I admit it. I love ABBA songs! I have always loved ABBA songs. I find them addictive and a guilty pleasure. Therefore, as you might imagine, I looked forward to seeing "Mamma Mia" when it came to the theaters.

Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to go and see the film there. I had to wait until it came out on DVD. It was a long wait but I wasn't
 disappointed.

It isn't often that a play or a film is built around existing music. It generally works the other way around. Songs are usually written to fit within the developed script.

"Mamma Mia" centers on Sophie Sheridan (played by Amanda Seyfried), a young woman about to be married. There is only one problem. Her father isn't present to walk her down the aisle. In fact, she doesn't know her father at all.

As Sophie finds a way to identify and contact her father, it becomes clear that there are, in fact, three possible choices for the role. One is Sam Carmichael (played by Pierce Brosnan). Sam was someone her mother met and fell in love with all those years ago, only to be left behind when he left her to return to his finance.

Another possibility is Harry Bright, another man her mother met the same summer. However, in this instance, it was her mother who turned loose of him.

The third is Bill Anderson (played by Stella Skarsgaard). Donna (played by Meryl Streep) also met him that summer. She used him to help her get over Sam and then left him behind as well.

Unable to determine which man might be her real father, Sophie invites all of them to the wedding. She convinces herself that she will know which man is her father the moment she sees him. Unfortunately, that does not turn out to be the case.

Once Donna sees the three men, however, she goes into a panic and turns to her best friends Tanya (played by Christine Baranski) and Rosie (played by Julie Walters). The three of them try to recreate their former days as a girl group while supporting and comforting one another.

I like musicals and often like them when they're made into movies. I have been leery of this one because I can't stand "Mamma Mia" the song (only because I had to choreograph a dance to it years ago which required me to listen to it nonstop). However, I think your review has convinved me that this could be a fun movie to check out.

Can't say I liked this movie much, but it did have its moments. I do have to say that I cringed everytime Brosnan sang though. He can be a great actor, but he is a horrible singer. I hate having to say that, but there you go. At the very least, I appreciate the energy that went into it. But if you want to see a really good musical, see "Hairspray." That one was a blast. Very good review Charlotte!
