Languishing in a postal line that was moving at glacial speed, my farsighted eyes read the small sign on the counter of the post office. The sign had a picture of the 100th Anniversary Stamp depicting a Hershey's Kiss stamp as part of the Postal Service's "Love and Kisses" stamp series. The USPS is having a contest to win a romantic $10,000 trip if able to guess how many Hershey's Kisses does it takes to fill a Priority Mail Flat Rate Box (11 7/8 X 3 3/8 X 13 5/8).

The contest picture had the flat rate box and an artist's rendition of silvered foiled kisses in 'perspective'. The kisses were of different sizes could be a clue. Miniature kisses are about half the size or the original version and both have silver foil. I thought to myself, that's how "they gotcha" because two different sizes are to be used. But wait, this is supposed to be for Valentine's day, wouldn't the box be filled with the special Cherry Cordial kisses made for Valentines? Maybe they are just ever so slightly bigger in order to contain the cherry.

I went to the Hershey's website and found numerous kinds of kisses, Dulce de Leche, Mint, Almond Special Dark, Peanut Butter, Coconut and Mini KISS Cookies with Confetti. All appeared to be the around the same size except for the Giant Hershey Kiss which is filled with kisses. The thirty dollar kiss is so big that it's too wide to fit inside the flat rate box.

The contest operators are not going to just give away $10,000 on an answer that a high school student can figure out the volume using a geometry cone equation. Or a person who simply buys a bunch of Hershey's Kisses, fills a box, and then count afterwards. The contest says anyone who is closest - without going over. One kind of estimate is the volume of the box divided by the volume of a standard kiss, assuming a neatly stacked filled box.

Takeaways
  • Make a guess to win $10,000 in a contest for Valentines Day.
  • There is a limit of one entry per person, regardless of method of entry.
  • Online entry must be received by 11:59:59 PM ET on February 15, 2007
Did You Know?

err. guys.. you could have just taken the integral using the disc method. where your radius is the function of f(x) on a graph with atleast 12 points on the perimeter of a kiss. i can't remember exactly.. somewhere around 1.4cm^3 ????

Lisa VanHoute, a Wayne County employee of Lyons National Bank in Newark "Since more than one entrant guessed the exact number (1,576), a random drawing occurred from among all correct entries. She is a real person, a real nice person who keeps her word. See http://www.waynetimes.com/031207.pdf

First, I computed the approximate volume of standard kiss, then volume of box, reaching 1,154. I also viewed the Hershey website's 45 minute manufacturing video and estimated that the packing shown would be 12 pkgs of 24, with 4 in a layer equalled 1,152. Allowing for non packaged kisses, I stayed with 1,154. I was not notified and can't find the winning amount...

HAHAHA YOUR ALL DEAD WRONG!!!! I BOUGHT 50 DOLLARS IN KISSES, CAUSE I GOT IT LIKE THAT, DUMPED THEM INTO THE BOX, SHOOK IT PACKED IT, SHOOK IT AND PACKED. THEN COUNTED. 1450 WITHOUT THE SIDES BULGING!!!I'M STILL WAITING FOR MY CHECK. AND A DENTIST APPOINTMENT

All of you are wrong!!! I spent the money, counted and it takes 2500 to fill the box with out the sides buldging. Hint: I built a form so that wouldn't happen. Good luck...

Well I put 82 on the bottom of the box and multiplied it by 14 and got 1148. Thats my guess. What is your thought? I'm sure lots of different guesses.

Using the math formula's would give you an amount of Kisses by volume if the kisses were melted down and chocolate filling the box. I think Sweepstake has the better method. Good luck to all.

Like a dope, I went to BJ's and bought 2 60oz. bags and a 48 oz. bag. Then using some basic math and assuming standard kisses and a non-bulging sealed box I came up with a number that is close to Sweepstake...however, there are so many variables that no two people would get the same exact amount.
