For senior citizens who either need or want to make a change in their living arrangements, there are many choices available and the choices cover all levels of care, from those are completely independent to those who need 24 hours care. The abundance of excellent senior citizen communities is a boon to the ever growing senior citizen population. Be prepared to be on a waiting list in most cases, though. Another alternative is for the senior citizen to remain in his present home and receive in home care from an agency like the one listed here. The senior citizen must meet certain requirements and they may require that a family member also live in the home, but it is the right choice for some and a good option while waiting for an apartment in one of the communities.

There are senior citizens who wish to remain in their own homes and need a small level of assistance. The University of Maine Senior Companion Program assists adults with special needs (particularly the frail elderly), through in-home visits, to live as independently as possible; and provides a meaningful volunteer opportunity to individuals 60 years of age or older, particularly those on limited incomes.

Penobscot Shore is an independent living community right on the ocean. There are cottages or apartments and they do allow pets with restrictions. It is similar to buying a co op, where you purchase shares in the corporation and do not actually own the property, but the prices are reasonable. Meals and housekeeping cost extra as do healthcare, 24-hour emergency call monitoring, scheduled van service, a wellness program, snow and trash removal, building maintenance and repair, and landscaping.
