When you think about giving your home a new look, you might think of new accessories, pillows, and curtains for the living room, or a fresh design in the kitchen. Making a new look in your bathroom, however, might pose some problems. For one thing, bathrooms are small, which means that you cannot put too much decor in them. Also, the tiles and fixtures are, unless you have a very large budget, there to stay. You must work around their color and design. It is possible, however, to get a new look with a complete bathroom decor update.

Soft Furnishings

Changing the soft furnishings of the room should start changing the look of your bathroom. These include the towels, the rugs, and any curtains you might have. A plain white bathroom that used to be populated by pink everything can be made masculine with dark blue. It can get a fresh spring look with turquoise, green, and blue striped towels and curtains.

If you want to make your bathroom decor follow a specific theme, replacing the towels and curtains can help you. Some popular bathroom themes include shells, tropical fish, and a country washroom look. There are towels and curtains with patterns that can reflect each one.

On the Walls

Many bathrooms have tile walls in the shower and bath stall. These sometimes continue around the room at a certain height. If you do have some normal wall space in your bathroom, you can paint it or use wallpaper to change the decor. Wallpaper, however, will have a short life in the bathroom, as the steam will loosen the paste.

Instead of just painting the walls a certain color, you might want to try stenciling a trim around the top, at the top of the tiles, or motifs here and there on the walls. If you have skill with a paintbrush, you can free hand paint fish or any other image you like.

If you do not have wall to decorate, but still want to change the look of your walls, you can paint right on the tiles. Using special tile or glass paint, you can free hand or stencil motifs right on the tiles. Paint shells and waves around the whole room, or create a Moroccan bath with faux mosaics.
