It is assumed that HIV and AIDS entered the US sometime in the 1970s, although they were not given a name until the early 1980s. After a decade of research, enough was known about HIV and AIDS to dispel such myths as "only gay men contract HIV", "AIDS can be spread by merely touching an infected person", or "HIV patients cannot have children". However, just as the medical community rolled out explanations for each myth that developed, some chose to hold to a specific myth that may have caused more harm than good: HIV does not cause AIDS.

The AIDS Dissident Movement Begins

In the late 1980's, a UC Berkeley Virologist named Peter Duesberg questioned the evidence that supported the theory that AIDS developed from an extended infection with HIV. HIV infected patients began to listen to the dissenters from the medical community and formed groups such as HEAL, Alive and Well AIDS Alternatives, ACT UP, and AIDS Reality Check, which supported the notion that HIV did not cause AIDS. Each group encouraged HIV infected patients to refuse antiretroviral drugs that were created to slow down the destruction of T-cells, which is seen as the main cause of the development of AIDS.

The AIDS dissident movement had come alive. Supporters sprung up around the country like wildflowers; all of them heeding the notion that HIV was not a killer, you could have a perfectly normal life, protected sex was not necessary, antiretroviral drugs were not necessary, bearing children and breastfeeding them without regard to passing on the infection was ok, and HIV absolutely did not cause AIDS. Their reasoning behind this notion was most of the newly diagnosed HIV patients felt fine. They were not ill nor were they having any symptoms that would lead them to believe their immune system was slowly being destroyed.

"HIV Does Not Cause AIDS" Says Christine Maggiore

Virologist Peter Deusberg's book, published in 1997, where he states AIDS develops from drug use and the HIV-AIDS correlation was created by pharmeceutical companies to sell AZT in the 1980s and 1990s.

Takeaways
  • AIDS Dissident organizations encouraged HIV infected patients to refuse antiretroviral drugs.
  • The AIDS dissident movement began in the late 1980s
  • There are medical professionals who have backed the movement's theories.
Did You Know?
By the year 2010, five countries (Ethiopia, Nigeria, China, India, and Russia) with 40 percent of the world's population will add 50 to 75 million infected people to the worldwide pool of HIV disease. - Until.org

@ all of you who oppose Kirsten. I don't beleive Kirsten has acknowledged either side of the HIV paradigm. Ancedotal stories require evidence or they remain Ancedotal..Kirsten has asked for reference or a citations rather than someones personal oppinion. Inspite of popular oppinion HIV is not a Death Sentence! since the FDA's requirement of Black Box Warnings for Antiretroviral drugs(ARV's) studies show that a multitude of toxic diseases are innevitable for people who take them. http://HIVAIDSPoliticalDenialism.blogspot.com/

If you are interested Kirsten in joining the Ning forum please email me and I'll send you an Invitation. Tomás @Jo Sweetie I do not mean to sound brusque, but you haven't even tried to budge from within your own mindset,Christine Maggiore is a wonderful person who has been taken to the woodshed many times by Orthodox HIV Theorists. By insenuating that Christine is bad person for her daughter dying of an Amoxicillin reaction is error on your part, and your lack of ability to learn the facts. while you may be guilty of slander you are also guilty of not speaking to Christine personally regarding the case of her daughter's death and come forth with a positive HIV(antibody) test unless of course the USA has adopted the "Bangui Definition" for AIDS.You should stray from dissenting and denying things that you are not familiar with.

Kirsten, I applaude you for your open mindness and your ability to present both sides of the HIV Theory, giving viewers the reasons of thinking for themselves. I would love to welcome you to the "Great debate of HIV and AIDS" where you can connect with other dissidents/rethinkers and meet people around the world who have a Testimony inspite of other "Ancedotal" responses here. Most people fail to acknowledge is that 'dissent' is within all of us, dissent is common in politics, religion, and of course science in our daily lives. Is the death penality considered Murder? Is abortion considered Murder? Is there a God? Is Jesus God? Is Pellegra and SMON caused by a Virus? Does HIV Exist? Is AIDS a Disease? Does HIV cause GRIDS/AIDS? Are Medications Poisonous? There are a multitude of reasons for one to be dissident, for example Galileo was a dissident, he was excommunicated because he did not believe the earth was flat. (although HIV dissidents are considered flat-earthers)

Thanks for the great article. It is heartbreaking to see that fear and ignorance is so rife about this disease that people actually think living in complete denial will somehow save their lives. The irony is that if they accepted their disease and what it means for their future they really could save their lives. The fact that Christine let her precious little girl die from her own denial is appalling. I am HIV positive. I was infected by my ex husband 11 years ago. He is now dead. I am still extremely healthy because I know how dangerous my illness is. I take extra care to really look after myself and still need no medications. I am remarried to a fantastic guy who doesn't have HIV. We have two amazing daughters who are negative thanks to the incredible medical care I received while pregnant and one of my girls is 3 like Christine's was. I can't imagine how a mother could have let her own fear lead stop her from putting her babies lives first. Truly devastating.

Regarding Sadun Kal's message: Disclaimer: I am by no means a medical expert. I wrote this article after being prompted by family members and friends who are medical professionals. Everyone is entitled to their point of view and many medical professionals have a completely different view than Sadun Kal's. But, at the same time, many share his/her point of view. So I'm leaving his/her messages on here so that readers can be exposed to each side. It's definitely a hot topic. Thanks for posting.

And about Christine's daughter, I think you are misinformed and misinforming: http://justiceforej.com/ http://www.lacitybeat.com/cms/story/detail/?id=3887&IssueNum=157 http://notaids.com/en/node/88 http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0ISW/is_275/ai_n16675808 I also suggest that you watch documentaries like "We Become Silent" and "The Corporation" to get a better understandingj of what's going on. Help for HIV: http://www.helpforhiv.com/ I find this website informative and a good information source as an introduction.

In fact, even Dr. Robert Gallo, the co-discoverer of HIV, said some interesthing things like: "I don't know if I made this point clear, but I think that everybody here knows-we never found HIV DNA in the tumor cells of KS. So this is not directly transforming. And in fact we've never found HIV DNA in T-cells, although we've only looked at a few. So in other words we've never seen the role of HIV as a transforming virus in any way. The role of HIV has to be indirect." ( http://www.virusmyth.com/aids/hiv/jlpoppers.htm ) But of course this was ignored by the orthodox medicine and NIAID and the mass media.

First of all you shouldn't trust NIAID or WHO more than you should trust the Bush administration or FOX-News, meaning you shouldn't trust at all. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmxB4efwJec) Your resource titled "How HIV causes AIDS" is nothing more than a bunch of claims, it doesn't show any reference to any scientific experiment or paper. I suggest that you read this: http://www.healtoronto.com/nih/main.html It's not right to say AIDS doesn't exist or AIDS isn't dangerous, but first you have to know what AIDS is: http://whatisaids.com It's no wonder that some of the "dissidents" die, seemingly because of AIDS. But after all the research I did about this debate, I am pretty certain it is not just a HI-Virus that caused a deficiency in their immunity system, there can be countless reasons for that. But fear can cause even the dissidents to settle for the easiest, most popular answer once they start to feel sick.

I know this is an old article but I feel like I can't let this stay here as it is. First of all you shouldn't trust NIAID or WHO more than you should trust the Bush administration or FOX-News, meaning you shouldn't trust at all.( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmxB4efwJec ) Your resource titled "How HIV causes AIDS" is nothing more than a bunch of claims, it doesn't show any reference to any scientific experiment or paper. I suggest that you read this: http://www.healtoronto.com/nih/main.html It's not right to say AIDS doesn't exist or AIDS isn't dangerous, but first you have to know what AIDS is: http://whatisaids.com This is from an interview with David Rasnick: "There are at least four definitions of AIDS in the United States the CDC [Centers for Disease Control] has come up with, and there's no such thing as an AIDS disease. All of the so-called AIDS defining diseases are known and old diseases. For example, dementia, diarrhea, Kaposi's sarcoma, cervical cancer, pneumonia

Not that it matters much but I was wondering on the Alive & Well site under personal message from Christine she states "Other happy news: My husband Robin and I celebrated our 11th year anniversary this month and I've got another party in the works for my mom's 80th birthday (but this time my brothers are bringing the desert!)" So are they divorced or not? It seems that she wrote this after September 2007

Latecomer to this article. It's a good article - although I must admit I was hugely disturbed by Ms Maggiore's 'What if Everything You Knew About AIDS' book a year or two back. Those early years with AZT being rushed to market were undoubtedly an 'officially sanctioned' mass drug trial that ended up killing many HIV+ thanks to massive toxicity that screwed up their immune systems worse than. The book seemed well researched but as you say knowledge moves on - although it seems to me that there is a HUGE question mark over the Africa issue. What about making sure all Africans get fresh water to drink, and proper nutrition before pumping them full of questionable and massively toxic drugs. This seems to be the REAL moral imperative for basic 'HIV treatment' throughout the blighted continent! - Brent @ http://www.gonando.com/

Joe, Thank you for commenting. I can appreciate that you have your own opinion, but I do not write propaganda. I thoroughly researched this before I published it. If you disagree with it, that's ok. But don't call me a liar. I am out for knowledge not a quick write. If you feel anything I've written is wrong, please send me the correct information with your supporting citations. Thank you. ~ Kirsten

Kirsten, You have no clue about AIDS. This is pure propaganda. You probably don't know anyone who is hiv+. Joe

Come on. What does this article prove? Nothing! Why is Christine still alive. Well I know. Sometimes it takes up to 20 Years to develop AIDS out of HIV. This discussion is totally confusing to me. I ve been following it for some years now. The "mainstream" claims many dissindets turn around and DO believe that HIV causes AIDS now. And the dissidents claim the exact opposite. The only thing I can say. There is nothing new to this topic. I ve heard all of this arguments before... Lets see what comes next!
