The Pursuit of Happyness: My Movie Review

4
After reading several not so favorable reviews of The Pursuit of Happyness I had to speak up and say at the very least, what this movie means to me.

I have watched the movie at least half a dozen times and it never fails to bring me to tears. This film is one of the most powerful films showing the beauty of the human spirit I have ever seen. His determination to overcoming all odds and devotion to his son truly inspires me.

Chris Gardner, struggling to provide for his family in 1970's San Francisco is a true story. He was a traveling salesman of "bone density scanners", a device that gave a picture denser than an x-ray machine but did not sell very well! He had to sell at least two a month to pay for rent and daycare. He had spent his family's life savings to start this business. He was aspiring to greatness for his family even though it did not work out as he had planned.

Thandie Newton plays the wife, Linda. Thandie Newton was superb in this movie. She was tough and gritty and worn down by the harshness that life had dealt the family. You could sense her desperation and hostility towards her husband, Chris, played by Will Smith. It is not directly stated but implied that Linda married Chris when she discovered she was pregnant with their son, Christopher. Even though Linda eventually leaves Chris and Christopher in the movie, you can sympathize with her and feel her sense of helpless in their situation. In her statement, "I know you'll take good care of him Chris", you know she really meant it.

Will Smith's own son, Jaden, plays the son, Christopher. He really steals the show. His wide-eyed innocence and devotion to his father tugs at your heartstrings. Will and Jaden's had an onscreen chemistry that would have been hard to duplicate with another child actor.

Chris Gardner, a man with no degree, aspired to be a stockbroker, even though he knew he would have to go through an internship for several months at Dean Witter. If he sold all of the scanners he had left, they might make it. Odds were against him, yet he persevered.
