When Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife and unborn baby, he gained a level of notoriety because of the nature of the murder. When he arrived on Death Row at San Quentin, he was flooded with mail and the prison received two phone calls from women who wanted to marry him. When Ted Bundy was on trial in Florida, he acted as his own attorney. During cross-examination of a character witness, he asked her if she wanted to marry him. She said she did and he said he wanted to marry her also and they were married. Richard "Night Stalker" Ramirez had an 11 year old relationship with a woman whom he ended up marrying. What attracts women to marrying someone who is incarcerated?

It is not easy to determine why any women would want to marry someone who is incarcerated for life or waiting on death row. Some say it is a thrill for the women, while others compare the fascination with that of a celebrity obsession. This article will lay out some of the theories of why women seek out love behind bars.

Throughout history, women have seemingly passed up the "good guy" for the "bad boy". This is one reason women may seek out love behind bars. They may feel the inmate is strong and is able to protect her because he is "dangerous". The worse the guy is, the more attractive he may become to a woman. It reminds me of the musical Grease. Sandy is a nice girl who falls for Danny, the bad boy rebel. There is something in the nature of humans which makes rebellion attractive to some. This could explain the physical aspect of the attraction.

The psychological aspect of women who marry men behind bars is very complex. Often times, the women who seek out these inmates suffer from a variety of psychological problems. They are often depressed and have poor self-esteem. They seek out the unconditional love of someone who has less than them to make themselves fell validated. The only problem with women who are depressed or have poor self-esteem is they become easy prey for these men. They become victims of the con artist and by the time they figure out the game it is too late.

Takeaways
  • Women are attracted to the "bad boy" image, thus flocking to some of the most notorious prisoners.
  • Validation of the self and feelings of hopelessness may contribute to a woman's interest in a prison
  • There is no clear cut reason why women fall in love with men behind bars.
Did You Know?
About 20 inmates get married at San Quentin the first Friday of even-numbered months and usually one death row inmate is among them.

I think your words are very true. I do not condone what the inmates have done. But some I see have very attractive qualities about them. I do not know what these men are like on the outside but from the inside I do feel quite affectionate for some of them. There is one man I work with who is released soon & I would dearly like to tell him how I feel about him but I feel the risk would be too great!!

This is a good article that makes you wonder about why people do the things they do. My son is in prison and I love him dearly. He made mistakes, poor judgements, and is paying for it. Prison strips you of everything and I can see why a woman would like to marry a prisoner. These prisoners are starving for someone to care about them and it gives them hope when someone writes them. We all make mistakes and some of us get away with things that others get caught at. I am not condoning anything that these prisoners do, just looking at it from their side. A prisoner appreciates a woman much more than the average good guy on the street. Prison gives a person lots of time to think about his mistakes, how he treats his loved ones, what he can do to improve himself, and what he would do different if he were free. I have heard of couples that had a great life together after prison and I still have hope for someone to come into my son's life that will love him.

I met the Love of my life on 8-25-01 and three months later he was incarcerated for something he did a year before we met. Yes he did do the crime and he is paying for it. I did gone on withmy life a year fay er he was locked up, but never forgot about him. It has been six years and here I am today waiting for him to come home... To my home. He has 2 1/2 years to go and I am willing to wait for him. I have a great job, I consider myself to be a very attractive and intelligent woman, so depression, self esteem, isnt the reason Y I love him. I love him cause he was good to me and even being behind bars he treats me better than any man in the freeworld has treated me. I love U Angel M.

I feel the writer Kristina Jones is correct all the way. I've always been interested in men in prison. Especiallly those with a long sentence. I just met a guy this July, and Im loving him, his whole bad boy image speaking for myself, its the bad boy imnage I like, call it crazy but the writer of this article has hit on so many true points when it comes to my situation. I just dont know what I will feel when he is released in 4 years. Will I fall for another prisoner.....

Hi I have my own business and I am a very sucessful individual who has fallen i love with a inmate, not only is he a inmate but he is also disabled. I'm not lacking self worth in any regards. And no I did not come from a disfunctional family. But as stated in other replies I have to say this. The only difference in a criminal asnd us is that we have never gotten caught. Who made you God to say who is right and who is wrong. Women have met men outside of prison who have ridiculed them and abused them on a daily basis. The man that I have fallen in love with has touched me in a mental and spiritual way. We have women who have been with men for years and know very little about them. By getting to know the individual on paper first I feel that you are seeking an aspect of the individual that many women dream of. What I'm trying to convey is this, in today's society we have become very judgemental of individuals in general. We have stereotyped individuals first before getting to k

Over a year ago I found out my childhood love has been in prison since 1999. I spent an entire year looking to find out about him and found him in a correctional facility in upstate NY. Got all his information and mailed out a card to him just to tell him a few words of kindness.Ever since, we've been writing to each other and discovered there are a lot of good feelings between us. We met back in 1972 and we share good memories. I visited him in prison about a week ago and it was very emotional for both. I believe I have feelings for him and he feels the same way. My heart tells me he's innocent...he needs all my support. The story is: we've been looking for each other ever since he divorced his 1st wife in 1988, the same year I divorced my 1st husband, but we just never knew about each other for over 20 years. We both understand there is no possibilities for us to have a future, but just by knowing we're there for each other we feel very grateful. I have always known him as a wonderfu

I fell in love with an inmate while working in a prison. I have a high self esteem and has never been depressed. Each case is different. I totally agree with precious Hullaby.

This is absolutely not true. If you knew me and my life you would know I am by far a very strong, secure and not at all depressed female. I am in love with an inmate and it's not for publicity or any of those things. I worked at a male correctional facility and I learned that a crime committed does not make you any less of a person. We commit offenses everyday even if it's just speeding or not wearing a seat belt. Those minor crimes can end in major crimes such as wreckless endangerment or manslaughter. Point being, the man I am in love with is a very strong, secure, well-minded and intelligent man who was young and misguided. He is a man though and He has learned from his mistakes and he is still a human inspite of society's ignorance. There are the types in which you write on but that's not always the case. You can not categorize the relationships as a one because it's not the case at all. Work at a male facility and see for yourself or better yet, speed and get in a wreck

As a prison rights activist, I write to many inmates, all over the nation. I have not fallen in love with any of them, however I have made some deep friendships. I do know many women who have fallen in love with inmates after they were already incarcerated. It wasn't something planned, it just happens the way it happens in the freeworld. These men offer their undivided attention, and maybe that also has something to do with it. Great article, and thoughts.

Well done. You have brought to light a very puzzling and complex nature of humans. Keep up the good work.
