Most people realize that driving in the winter is dangerous. It is important to keep safety in mind. The conditions change and those who are not educated on how to be safe are involved in or the cause of accidents. The style of driving is not the same as on a warm spring day - you have to be prepared and adjust your style to the conditions of severe winter weather. Here are a few helpful pointers on how to stay safe during the cold winter months. Remember if you do not have to drive, simply wait until the morning or at least until the roads have been cleared. But if you must get to your destination here are a few tips to do it safely.

1) Vision is the most important aspect of driving, if you cannot see the road clearly in front of you then there is going to be a problem. Make sure that you check your wiper blades, in areas of heavy snowfall there are winter blades that you can purchase and easily install onto your car instead of the regular wiper blade design. Also make sure that you have your headlights and fog lights if they are available on your model.

2) Traction is key to safe winter driving, you have to make sure that you maintain a lower speed, so that you can maintain your cars control. It is very important to check your tire pressure, the proper amount of air should be in your tires. When inflated the tires have more grip to the snow covered pavement. If you can afford to do so, get snow tires conventional tires do not supply the same grip as snow tires would. The same is also true when compared to all season tires. Another way to help stay to the ground is to make sure that your gas tank is always at least half-full. You make your car that much more heavier, plus the added bonus is you ensure that your car will start, and the gas wont freeze.

3) Slow down and use a lower gear, Most cars have "D2" and "D1" these lower gears are made for this type of weather. They also help keep you on the road and are prime for getting up steep inclines and hills. No matter what type of automobile you have, take your time. Do not assume that your car can handle the elements, even if you have an SUV. It takes 4 wheels to slip, no matter what it has equipped, i always say.

These tips have come in handy after a recent snow storm which dropped about a foot on my college town.
