A brilliant inventor by the name of Dr. John Styth Pemberton had wanted to duplicate a famous wine elixir called Vin Mariani that happened to be made with coca. Up until this time, he had also invented Indian Queen Hair Dye, Triplex Liver Pills, Globe of Flower Cough Syrup, and an Extract of Styllinger. Pemberton had instead developed a syrup drink from sugar water, coca, and a kola nut extract in his own back yard located in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon creating this new syrup, Pemberton had taken his syrup mixture to a drug store where a druggist by the name of Willis Venable was able to add carbonated water.Even though Pemberton had created a golden opportunity, he didn't hold on to the rights of the product and formula. They had both been sold and traded several times before they came under the property of Asa G. Candler in 1888. Candler did indeed turn out to be a good caretaker of the formula and trademarked the name Coca-Cola on January 31, 1893. Even the bottle itself had been made to perfection at Root Glass in Terre Haute, Indiana, designed by Alexander Samuelson.
Since the trademark of Coca-Cola in 1893, the recipe has only been changed once to this day with a very good reason. For the first time in history, Pepsi-Cola had outsold Coca-Cola in 1985 in the United States. At an eager attempt to regain the number one soft drink product, Coca-Cola changed the products name to New Coke and sweetened it. However, consumers had demanded the company bring back the old formula within three months, forever ending New Coke. To this day, the original and newly named Coca-Cola Classic has been the only choice for this company to go with.
