Are you an Atheist Seeking Love?

Don't Waste Time With EHarmony.com

It's a good thing I wasn't serious when I filled out a free questionnaire on EHarmony.com. It is, however, a good thing that I spoke with two friends with whom I have spiritual views in common about my experience, otherwise, maybe I'd be a little offended.

It all started with a conversation about romantic relationships with a close friend. We were talking about honesty in relationships, or lack thereof. But, that's another article. This is the discussion that prompted me to fill out the questionnaire, in a manner of utmost honesty, and to see what I'd come up with for matches.

This was a lengthy questionnaire. Some of the questions were vague and difficult to answer, and the user has to make an effort to see him/herself clearly and objectively to be honest. I did a good job, I think; based on my answers, I hardly believed that there is no one out there who would have an interest in me.

But, much to my surprise, after I finished my profile I was surprised with my results screen. "Unable to Match You at This Time."

Really?

I read on. The claim is that 1 in 5 people fit into this category. The folks at EHarmony would rather let these unmatchables know up front than risk a bad match. I have to admit disappointment, though, when there was no cause for such a determination - it was a computer generated response that took a mere moment to surface - why couldn't there have been and indication as to why I'd fallen into this category? (Maybe a "Pst! Hey! It was section X, question 12...)

I laughed about this on the phone with my friend, and so over the phone we completed his profile too. Same response. A few days later, he mentioned this to a friend of his. Same result.

Light Bulb!

We three realized our only common demoninator, as we are quite different in most other aspects of our personality.

Takeaways
  • There are few online sites that recognize Atheists.
  • It is possible that three people were "unable to be matched" on Eharmony.com due to being Atheists.
  • Atheists are more moral than believed to be by their religious counterparts.

I suggest moving to Portland, Or. Everyone there is an atheist.

Oh, that is the reason all those people are rejected. I assumed it was because they were Lesbian/gay. I'm not religious and I was accepted a few years back, weird.

I only read the first part of this article, but I wanted to point out 2 things: 1. eHarmony is geared towards Christians, in case you didn't know (or those who affiliate with a certain religious group) 2. I recently got rejected from eHarmony too, with a similar message, so it is not just Atheists

Insomnia Princess- very interesting fact!! Maybe they are funded by that Marraige thing Bush wants to push... just kidding. But really-- I find it wrong for a company that is so recognizable would exclude atheists. Great article!! I enjoyed.

"[eHarmony founder]Warren is an Evangelical Christian with strong ties to the conservative Christian community." (from NPR:http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4803877). eHarmony is based around the individual's belief in God, which is likely why you had such a poor experience. It can be argued that eHarmony is misleading by not telling people this information on their home page. Good article and best of luck to you!

Intersting article. If you're legitimately looking for an atheist dating service, http://www.secularity.com/ You're less likely to encounter McCarthy-age bigotry there.
