Today in the entertainment industry, it is almost impossible to see a movie with little or no violence. Movies such as Kill Bill, Black Christmas, and The Hitcher have shocked the nation with killing, sex, rape and indecency. It seems like a battle to see who can take it to the next level and create a bigger reaction from the audience. The entertainment industry knows "the bloodier the better" and they will go as far as the public will let them.

When an adult goes to the movies, they expect to see some form of violence or degradation. It's been a part of the entertainment industry for many years. If violence were to be limited or eliminated from television and movies, people just wouldn't get the same entertaining value out of it. Nobody wants to see a happy ending every time they watch a movie or sit down to watch a television program. If the entertainment industry were to remove violence from the media, the public would search for new forms of entertainment that would give them the rush they are accustomed to.

The rating system on movies has been a debated topic for many years now. Parents of today's youth feel it is the entertainment industry's responsibility to censor the movies and television shows and make them less violent and degrading. If the entertainment industry refuses, as they have been, then the parents feel that the government should step in (Daphne White). This poses a problem, namely the first amendment to the American Constitution also known as, "Freedom of Speech". The entertainment industry has the advantage over the parents due to this right.

Great article! I think it is the MPAA's responsibility to make sure that movies and t.v. shows receive the correct ratings, and it is the parents responsibility to monitor what their kids are watching.

I was only carded once to get into an R rated movie, and I was over the age of 18 by then.

Also, I just like you, easily got into rated R movies when I was underage and was never carded or questioned. While the rating is in effect, it's not easy to enforce.

You've made good points about the rating system as well as the movie industry today. I'm disappointed in most recent movies. When loads of sex, violence and profanity are used purely for shock value and not as a means of adding to the value of the film, it's pointless and sometimes insulting. They're saying, "Let's not waste time or money making a great film when we can add hot naked women, gun shootings and profound use of the f-word, people will pay to see it!"
