I'd love to be beautiful.

The blue eyed, blond haired babe

who hears the cat calls

and the whistles as she walks.

The one who all the girls envy

and all the boys adore.

With the glistening hair

and the flawless makeup.

Seeing the desire in the eyes

of all those who pass.

But as I stare

my dull gray eyes

melt into the dark clouds

of the storm rolling through the sky.

And I question

why I can't be as beautiful,

why no one gawks

at my mouse brown hair

and simple smile.

And the rain falls

hitting my plain pony tail

hard and cold.

And I stand in this shower

as everyone runs for cover.

Thinking about her

and her precious pink umbrella

she thinks will save her from the rain.

When the storm ends

I stare into a puddle

and see the reflection

of that girl

running past my own.

That girl

who I once dreamed to be like

her beautiful blond hair

now matted to her head

her dark brown roots exposed.

And her impeccable make-up

now dripping down her face

showing her natural,

splotchy complexion.

The storm has washed away her beauty.

But I stand with the same brown hair

and the same simple smile.
