Act like Royalty at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park

A Must-See While Visiting Ireland

When people think about Irish castles, they instantly envision Blarney Castle. We ended up going to that legendary castle later in our trip, and were more than disappointed. Not only was it overrun with tourists and covered in graffiti, it just hasn't held up well through time. While in
County Clare, however, we visited a much more impressive castle named Bunratty. Situated near the Shannon Airport, it is Ireland's most complete medieval castle and has been restored with authentic furnishings.

During a tour of this castle, you can experience what it was like to live in the medieval period. You can even go down into the dungeons.

A Folk Park that recreates a 19th century Irish Village surrounds the castle. You can enter the cottages and farmhouses and meet people dressed in the typical clothing of the time period. They may be making crafts, baking food to sample, forming candles, or weaving. Be sure to visit the local schoolhouse, doctor's office, post office, and pub. There are also farm animals and shops to visit.

That evening we returned to attend the medieval banquet. Eating in a castle built in 1425 is an experience not to be missed. A mead reception in the Upper Great Hall is the first festivity. You will learn some castle history and be entertained by talented singers. Then you will descend to the banquet hall complete with long oak tables and candlelight. Enjoy a four-course meal and wine while listening to music and song. After dinner, the fun continues when someone is thrown into the dungeon. The night concludes after listening to traditional Irish music, including the much-loved Danny Boy. There are two seatings nightly (5:30 and 8:45). If you are traveling to Ireland, Bunratty Castle and Folk Park will be a memorable experience for you and your family.
