Originally referred to as "Brooklyn Village," Brooklyn Heights is a neighborhood that spans from Fulton Street near the Brooklyn Bridge to Atlantic Avenue, and from the East River to Court Street and Cadman Plaza. Here is why Brooklyn Heights is the best neighborhood in Brooklyn. 1. Brooklyn Heights is the closest part of Brooklyn to lower Manhattan. Serviced by a variety of subway lines - including the A, C, F, M, R, 2, 3, 4, and 5 - it is as convenient a neighborhood as any in the borough.
2. The neighborhood is rich in history. This area was massively fortified just before the largest battle of the American Revolutionary War, known as The Battle of Brooklyn. As British troops landed on Long Island and advanced, General George Washington skillfully retreated across the East River to Manhattan, saving his remaining troops and supplies.
3. Brooklyn Heights is situated on a bluff that was once called "Ihpetonga," (meaning the high, sandy bank), by the Lenape Native Americans.
4. Brooklyn Heights boasts some of the finest architecture in New York City. The area is filled with picturesque rowhouses, even a few mansions. Protected by the 1965 Landmarks Preservation Law of New York City, you can continue to view authentic mansions along Pierrepont Street and Pierrepont Place. The northern part of Brooklyn Heights contains some Federal-style houses from the early 19th Century. And brick Greek Revival and Gothic Revival houses, as well as breathtaking Italianate brownstones, are still prevalent.
5. Visitors and residents alike can take advantage of some truly magnificent views. The Promenade over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline across the East River, and both the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge.
6. On the 4th of July, it is the perfect place to view the Macy's July 4th fireworks.
7. Brooklyn Heights continues to enjoy a small town atmosphere. Because it is designated as an historic district, Brooklyn Heights has very few high-rise buildings, and thus continues to boast its village ambience.
