Summer time is notorious for its long days of playing at the beach or lake, fishing trips or camping vacations, and all of the great outdoor fun in the sun that comes with them. Did you know that all of that sun could be harmful? It is. About 50 percent of us will develop some form of skin cancer by the age of 40. I used to love laying out at the beach during summer break and getting a good tan. My last time "baking" in the sun I got sun poisoning. My doctor told me about the dangers of the sun and how I should avoid direct contact on the hot blistering sunny days on my skin. Not only is there skin cancer, but all kinds of things like sunburns, sun poisoning, heat rash,etc... But, you don't have to change your plans to take preventable measures. You just need to change what you wear on your skin.

· Sunscreen. There are many different types of sunscreen and sunblock on the market now that you can choose from. Look for one that won't clog your pores(the same idea as using your deodorant rather than anti-perspirant deodorant. There are sweet smelling coconut fragrant sunscreens to neutral smelling ones to choose from. Pick one that suites to your liking and apply whenever you and your family are enjoying your outdoor activities.

· Clothing. Instead of wearing your shorts and tank tops everyday, wear long sleeved shirts and long pants that are light weight and are breathable fabrics. Of course when you are swimming you can't very well jump into the pool full dressed. When swimming, wear your bathing suite and be sure to apply and keep re-applying your sunscreen. Instead of wearing your hair back in a pony-tail, keep it down and wear hats to cover and protect you face when in direct sunlight.

· Lotion. Rub a good amount of lotion with vitamin E in it on your skin when out of the sun and back indoors. Your skin will need to be replenished of the vitamins and moisture that the sun has stripped it of.

So, you don't necessarily have to change your lifestyle or activities in order to avoid the dangers of the sun. Just take some precautions. Have a healthy, fun, and safe summer!
