Recently there has been plenty of media attention dedicated helping eliminate AIDS in Africa. Many companies have announced that they will be creating products whose proceeds will go to fight AIDS in Africa through (PRODUCT) RED. Even the president has asked congress in his State of the Union Address that $1.5 billion of American taxpayers' money be sent to the cause over the next five years as well. Everyone is being begged to stop the genocide in Darfur, but no one cares about the suffering in their own backyards.

(PRODUCT) RED was created by U2 singer Bono and DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) Chairman Bobby Shriver in 2006. Now of course AIDS in Africa is a major issue there, 60% of the HIV/AIDS infected population in the world lives there. These statistics aren't really that staggering considering it is suspected to have originated in the sub-Saharan region of Africa. We can't really expect them to stop the epidemic on their own considering many of the infected are primitive people who didn't excel in being civilized or having economic growth even before the AIDS epidemic. Yes, it's a terrible thing that people are dying. But it's even worse that they continue to pass it to one another and their children when they should know the dangers by now.

I for one, refuse to buy any (RED) products or give money to a cause overseas when there are people here in our own backyards who are dying of starvation and disease. Diseases like cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease affect millions of helpless Americans each year. Very little can be done to prevent many of these deadly life changing diseases. Even AIDS is still killing Americans who cannot afford the antiretroviral treatment that would prolong their lives.

Many Americans live on our streets begging for a living, but so many people walk by and donate their money overseas, ignoring the pain and suffering of their countrymen. American children are growing up orphans because their parents were killed senselessly in their unsafe neighborhoods. They have to walk to school in fear because drug deals and prostitution are riddling their once safe route.

"Skid Row" in Los Angeles, CA. There is generally one run down area referred to as skid row in every major North American city.

Shanda, You have a brave, even courageous write here. No doubt you knew this could well meet with some blistering criticisms. I have lived in the inner cities that Jeff is referring to and quite frankly, I have learned to feel much the same way about those places as you do about the Africans in the boondocks there. I truly l;ove the idea of helping people. I truly am committed to helping those who want it and are willing to continue rowing after I/we give them a push. Those who won't row...let 'em drown...or bomb them. We are heading for a world of "shoulder to shoulder" people, and those who are insisting on living as if they are junk should be allowed to go the way of junk. Sorry to always appear adversarial, Jeff, but your words wreak of a man with near no hands on experience. We cannot help all opf the people, but we can do a damned good job with those who want it. The others, give 'em their booze, their dope and say goodnight Johnboy.

And the comment posted by Mr. Musall is a typical liberal response to common sense. I don't care about America's donations compared to Japan or Europe, I'm saying we have quite a few issues here on the homefront that we need to worry about before we can redirect our money and sympathies overseas. It's not ignorant to think that, it's ignorant to pretend like people in America aren't suffering. What do you have to say about the child abuse and protective services we have in this country? We have no right to go to other countries giving them money and telling them how to spend it when we can't even help the people (or animals we put in bad situations) here. I am proud to be a typical American, we need more of us who have compassion and pride in being American instead not caring about or even hating our countrymen and nation.

This is a typical American attitude from far too many typical Americans. It speaks volumes of when you write that animal shelters deserve more donations than third world countries...and now for some facts...America allots less per capita for overseas aid than Japan or Europe, as well as some poorer countries. While I cannot speak for the writer here, it has been my experience that those who so vocally oppose helping other countries instead of the needy here often aren't doing anything for the needy here either..and the fact that there are needy people in America should be seen as a blistering indictment of a system that allows for systematic and greedy accumulation of more wealth by those that already have it while ignoring the needy. And on another note, money spent helping others find relief from strife and disaster is money alot better (and more cost effective) than bombing them..
