First there was texting, now there is sexting. Sexting pictures - sending sexy photos via cell phone - is not a new phenomenon. CBS News reports on a case where sexting pictures got three teen girls and three teen boys in hot water. The girls took pictures of themselves nude or semi nude and then sent them on to the boys. The teens sexting pictures and the teens receiving them are now brought up on child pornography charges.

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy surveyed 653 teens (ages 13 - 19) and 627 young adults (ages 20 - 26) and made some startling discoveries. 33% of young adults admit to sexting, but an even more concerning 20% of teens admit to doing so. Even more worrisome is the fact that 15% of teens who admitted to sexting pictures did so to someone they only knew from an online chat room or similar venue.
Moving right along, there is the disturbing notion that 25% of teen girls, as well as 33% of teen boys, allege that they were shown nude or semi nude photos of others, which were not intended for them to see, but which were shared with them nonetheless.
Why are Teens Turning into Sexting Child Porn Producers?
Sexting pics is discussed among teens as a cool and fun activity that is also great for getting a gal or guy to notice someone. They do not call it child porn, but instead refer to it as flirtatious. The reality is different. The study reveals that 52% of teen girls were pressured by some boy to take and send the nude photos. 23% of teen girls claim that a friend applied pressure to engage in sexting pics.
It is apparent that a good many teen girls are not turning into child porn fodder of their own free will but instead because of peer pressure. It is the same peer pressure that is endangering your teen to face prosecution for the production, distribution, and possession of child pornography.

I would love to believe my teen is pressure proof..one of the things I'm proud of...but I'm not naive and these things are worrisome...each case would have to be examined on its own merits prior to prosecution..but the implications are huge.

Any prosecutor turning a case of relatively same age kids exchanging nude photos into a crime is going overboard. Remember, there is no statutory rape when kids are within the same age range generally so why should this be any different?
I keep telling teens to knock this kind of behaviour off becuase I have a very close teen family member who does this and I don't think she knows what she's getting herself into. This is another reason why parents, when asked, "Can I have a cell phone?" Should either say no, or get one of those phones that the parents can control that can also not have pic text options. Though, yes, they could use another friends phone. And I think parents have every right until the legal age to compensate teens phones for a thorough search.
I consider myself teen culture savvy - but hadn't heard of this becoming so prevalent or having a name. This is awful.

Another example of how the laws fail us. A 16 year old who wants to send her bf a pic of her boobs shouldn't be prosecuted and jailed. This is ridiculous. Didn't know it was called sexting. Thanks for the heads up.
