All traffic is good traffic, right? Not as far as my money is concerned.
There are many different levels of quality in dealing with traffic, from really short-attention-span surfers that accidentally click onto your site, all the way up through highly attentive, well-targeted visitors genuinely interested in your website's topic.
Furthermore, there are even different mindsets of traffic that aren't even associated with the quality of the traffic. For instance, some people may only be researching something that isn't for sale at all, while others may be looking to buy something right at this very instant. It's more the mindset of the traffic you receive, not the quality, that determines your profits.
First of all, you must consider the fact that traffic must come from somewhere. If your aim is to have your visitors turn into buyers, then your best source of traffic is not traffic that arrived on your site from a completely unrelated site. People searching in a search engine for DVD player comparisons, who arrive on your horse racing website aren't nearly as likely to be interested in your content as they would something to do with DVD players.
In fact the scenario is downright impossible, unless you've purposely fooled the search engine into believing your website is about DVD players... Otherwise there would be no way for the surfer to get to your website from a search engine with that topic of search.
However, if your visitor just googled the term "Kentucky Derby" and your horse racing site was the result that they clicked on, then you officially have a high-quality, "targeted" visitor.
Despite all the effort it takes to getting your visitor there, having high-quality visitors is only half of the battle to profit. Maybe even less than half. The easier half for sure.
At this point you must factor in the mindset of the visitor, which can be determined not by the search phrase that they used, but by the source website that they came from.
