Inter-country adoption for U.S citizens is the process of adopting a child from another country other than the United States of America. It involves the process of submitting the child, the biological parents or guardians and the adopters to a legal process that creates a parent child relation between the adopters and severs the parent-child relationship between the child and the biological parents. The adopted child, often referred to as the "adoptee" is then entitled to all privileges and rights belonging to a natural child.

The first step in inter-country adoption is to know the legal processes that are involved in the country where the adoptee resides. Most legal proceedings involved in inter-country adoption are conducted between the private individual or parents who wishes to adopt and the foreign court which operates under the laws of a certain country. The United States government cannot intervene on behalf of prospective parents nor directly involved itself with the legal processes in the country where the adoption takes place. The U.S government will only provide information about the various adoption processes in other countries and the legal requirements as to how to bring the adopted child to the United States. This information is available through the Office of Children's Issues of the U.S State department.
