Tyra Banks Show Kills World of Warcraft: Will One Man Give Up His Addiction?

Someone Should Tell Tyra You Can Play Without the CDs

If you have not seen the recent clip from Tyra Banks' hit daytime talk-show where she helps a young woman confront her fiance about his addictive game play, then you might want to check it out so you know what I'm talking about here.

First, I have to say that I love Tyra. I'm not really a TV fan so I don't watch her show religiously or anything but I've always been a big fan of her. I really like the way she keeps things real and tries to be a great role-model for all women out there. That
being said, she really let me down on this one.

Let's explain upfront that the focus of this show was not on video games, MMORPGs or World of Warcraft. The focus of the show was helping people confront their loved ones about a problem. This woman had a problem and she went on Tyra's show to confront her fiance and recent father of her newborn baby.

The fact that the show mentioned World of Warcraft leads one to take notice of how incredibly large WoW has now become and shortly after the episode of Tyra's show aired, clips of this segment were all over the internet, featured on sites like You-Tube and link-posted on forums all over cyberspace. It spread like a bad plague, haunting us all because although our minds told us not to look, curiosity won and we watched the stupid clip anyway.

To fill you in for those that missed it, here's the basis of the story. Girl goes on Tyra and says soon-to-be-husband ignores her and their new baby girl to play World of Warcraft all day. Girl says she's asked him to stop and spend time with her and baby and he refuses. Girl says she's threatened to leave him if he doesn't stop his addictive behavior. He stays up all night playing and even sleeps on the couch before waking up to play again before work. Next comes the real clincher when she proclaims that he left her in the hospital in labor to go home and play for a few hours before coming back to deliver their child.

By this point, every non-gamer in the audience is either hating this guy or thinking he's some kind of freak and every gamer is well, probably not watching the Tyra Banks show in the first place.

I think that both people have their faults in this case. I for one play almost every single MMORPG out there that's free, as well as WoW (World of Warcraft). and although I think that, yes the person could have gotten off of the computer once in a while, his fiance was also at fault, She assumes that he is addicted to the game and thinks that that's the only reason he's playing. But he just could have easily have played for the same reason I play video-games, to get away from life's stresses. Everyone has their own stress-reliever, weather it's listening to music, meditating, sleeping, or in mine case, playing World of Warcraft. I think that most people think that someone who plays videogames "addictivly" is thinking that either the person has a problem or that the game has an addictive quality about it. The reason people choose games to relieve stress is because it is like a second-life, but wth no down-sides. If your friend pisses you off, you can put them on your ignore list so th

Where is all this support coming from? I for one have played those silly games. Go outside and take a walk, people. Play with your kids. Clean the house. Go to work. Three hours in front of the computer is a short time to you people? I have a busy enough life just living! What are you people giving up that you can spend that much time in front of a screen playing make-believe? He actually left her in the hospital.... while she was giving birth and you see nothing wrong with that? That's just sick. Get help.

well im in no way addicted (i only play on weekends and even so its just a 2-3 hours) but it seems i bit undermining for tyra to keep calling it "some video game" and stuff like that. we could call her make up "some powdery shit" or her face "this random thing" but we try and respect these things. though the 30 year old guy playing it should be mocked, the game that he is playing should not as there are some 12 years olds (like me) that still like them. the truth is that she has no idea what WoW is. in her soap-opera-need-nothing-but-love little world video games are probably never mentioned. this was a real insult and a pathetic attempt to send some public message to the world that video games are bad and shit like that. thank god she didnt do a very good job at it, any gamer who saw that would have laughed their asses off. i know i did.

I laughed so hard when I watched this. Tyra smashes his discs and "sets him free", too bad that computers can store information such as games and WoW doesn't need the game discs to play anyway. As soon as that guy got home he just turned the game on again, good job Tyra. Why they let people with the IQ of a 4th grader have their own TV show I will never know. Just goes to show you that it doesn't matter if your dumb or smart, pretty is all that counts.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but has Tyra actually done anything to deserve the reputation she gets? My mother and my sister both watch America's Next Top Model, prior to watching it they had no idea who Tyra was, now they think she's a saint for "having the courage to tell someone that they arent beutiful". You can almost certainly compare The Tyra Banks show to Dr. Phil and even Jerry Springer for the fact that they need to attack so called "problems" if they are to survive. Gaming, especially that of MMO's has changed significantly over the last few years, its not for pale, white, acne prone loners anymore. Warcraft is such a cultural phenomenon now that you could find an "average" person walking down the street that plays Warcraft with the next 50 people you pass by after him. This is purly opinionative and I dont expect the world to change because some nameless guy behind a computer monitor said so, but personally, looking at the way Tyra makes her money, and how much shes sol
