Day Trips in Southwest Virginia

Spring will be coming around the corner very soon. It will be time to start thinking of how you want to spend your free time with your family or just the kids. Southwest Virginia has lots to offer in beauty, scenery and attractions throughout the area. Here are some places that I have enjoyed or that I would like to visit myself this year. When you have a beautiful day to enjoy; pack a picnic lunch and head out to one of this places.

Fort Chiswell Animal Park

The Fort Chiswell Animal Park features exotic wild animals and some tame animals for petting. The admission covers the price for both The Petting Zoo and The Outback. The animal park is located on 569 Red Hollow Road in Max Meadows, Virginia. Take I-81 and 77 to exit 80 at Fort Chiswell onto 52 south. After a couple of miles you will come to the Fort Chiswell High School. Turns left immediately after passing the school onto Red Hollow Road and then follow the signs to the animal park.

The admission fee is $10 for adults and $8 for children. Children 2 and under are admitted free of charge. The park opens this year on March 21st. The hours are normally 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. but will vary according to season. You will be able to view zebras, ostriches, camels, water buffalo, bison and many more animals. When you are finished you can stop at the petting part of the zoo and enjoy the tame animals.

GaleWinds Amusement Park and Raceway

GaleWinds is located in Wytheville, Virginia off I-81 on Exit 77. It features one of the largest arcades in the area. You can drive go-carts, sprint cars, kiddie's carts and more. They also have an 18-hole mini golf course. They have a picnic area and a snack shop for dining. They are open seven days a week.

Cascades Falls

The Cascades are located in Pembroke, Virginia. Follow 460 into Giles County on turn on route 623. If you enjoy hiking you will enjoy this trip climbing about three miles up the mountain and back to view the falls and swimming pond. Take your bathing suit with you if it's hot and enjoy a swim when you get there. Take plenty of drinking water because I have made this hike a couple of times and it's a good long hike.
