When it comes to the study of psychological conditions probably no American Presidents have presented a more challenging opportunity than Abraham Lincoln and Richard Nixon. It is now widely accepted that Abe Lincoln was suffering from clinical depression of one sort or another and Richard Nixon offers up a classic study of the paranoid personality. It is perhaps a testament to the intelligence of both men that they are seen as very complex personalities whose motivations are often impenetrable. And yet it seems quite safe to say that in another fifty years there will be more books that attempt to plumb the psychological depths of George W. Bush than all the books that do the same about Lincoln and Nixon combined. Oddly, of course, there exist very few who would place Bush's intelligence in the sphere dominated by Lincoln and Nixon. So what gives? Is Bush really a complex psychological creature or not? I have a theory. I can't prove it, of course, but then if I could prove it it would be a fact and not a theory. As the saying goes. I want to present my case that George W. Bush is, in fact, not psychologically complex, but that all his bizarre actions can be attributed to a single incident far in his past. After studying Bush's actions and doing some research, I am convinced that it is within the realm of possibility that the President is suffering from the effects of general paresis. General paresis is a degenerative mental disorder that results from the effects of contracting syphilis. The incubation period for general paresis is much longer than the other effects of syphilis; it can take as long as thirty years.
