Overall business for the movie industry was down nearly eleven percent from the same weekend last year. This could be a result of fewer new releases being released this past weekend. Boxofficemojo.com reports that new horror flick The Messengers opened at number one with an estimated $14 million box office take in.

The Messengers opened up this rating to much hype. Based on the premise that children are more likely to see ghosts and other forms of the supernatural, The Messengers delivered thrills and an expected box office intake for it's opening weekend. Finishing in second place behind The Messengers was the movie Because I Said So. Because I Said So is a romantic comedy about the growing up of Mandy Moore and her intruding mother who wants to make sure she meets Mr. Right. The movie took in $13 million in it's opening weekend.

Epic Movie, which is a comedy that pokes fun at many other movies, fell from the top of the box office to third place with an estimated $8 million box office take in. This is good news to the creators of the movie, as they were looking for the movie to hold strong. Seeing that this is Super Bowl weekend and spending at the theaters becomes less, the numbers are still very strong.

Finishing the top five were the movies Night at the Museum and Smokin' Aces. Surprisingly, Smokin' Aces continues to do disappointedly even though it was heavily hyped and talked about among movie fans alike. Night at the Museum has demonstrated solid staying power and demonstrated that Ben Stiller is still a favorite among many.

The Messengers helped continue the trend of horror movie dominance on Super Bowl weekend. Last year, When a Stranger Calls was the top box office movie. The year before, the movie Boogeyman helped establish the horror movie dominance we now see today.

Next week will mark the releases of Hannibal Rising and Norbit. Each movie is expected to compete for the number one spot. Many people are looking forward to Norbit because it marks the return of Eddie Murphy playing several characters like he did in the Nutty Professor. Hannibal Rising will allow fans to continue to get their horror movie fix.
