Easter Craft - Easter Egg Rice Art
Rice art is a fun and creative craft that you can do yourself or with a group of children. Start with Easter eggs and then follow your imagination. Here are the instructions to begin...
First you'll make the colored rice, and then you'll make your picture. Here's what you'll need:
Supplies:
Rice (uncooked)
Food dye
Disposable plastic cups
Disposable plastic spoons
Paper towels
Paper plate
Glue
Scissors
Paperboard (or poster board paper, or something similar)
Small paintbrush
Step 1 ~
First you'll need to color your rice. Using the plastic cups and spoons, stir food dye into the uncooked rice. Stir it around in the cups so that it's colored evenly. Do as many different colors as you plan to use. Be sure to leave one batch of rice uncolored, so that you'll have 'white' to work with too.
Step 2 ~
Spread the rice out on paper towel covered paper plates (to soak up any excess dye) and let it air dry. You may want to stir it around every little while to keep it from sticking together as it dries.
Step 3 ~
While you're waiting, get your paperboard ready. You can use an unfolded empty cereal box as a base, since you'll be covering up any printing on it as you work. You can use any paper that's stiff enough to support the weight of the rice, and that won't get all soggy when you cover it with glue. You can start with a basic square or rectangle, or you can start by cutting it into an Easter shape, such as an Easter Egg, or a bunny.
Step 4 ~
When the rice is dry, use your paintbrush to spread a layer of glue on the front of your paperboard, one section at a time. Pour the rice in the color for that section onto the glue, and press lightly to make sure it sticks. Then tilt the paper so that any excess rice slides off (back into the cup!) before you go on to the next section.
Step 5 ~
Continue adding colored rice to different sections until your entire paper is covered with your Easter design.
Step 6 ~
Lay your creation flat, and give it a chance to dry thoroughly. Then hang it up where everyone can enjoy your Easter rice art masterpiece!
Happy Easter!
