In 1904, a Toronto pharmacist by the name of J. J. McLaughlin had started a small plant that manufactured soda water to be sold in drug stores. This was meant to be mixed with fruit juices and flavored extracts, but he ended up developing a new ginger ale while trying to improve the old-style formula of the recipes. At the time, corner drugstores where the only location that sold carbonated beverages, but McLaughlin had started the technique for mass bottling that made it possible to serve to larger crowds such as those of a public beaches and baseball games.

By 1923, McLaughlin's descendants had sold the company for $1 million to the present-day founders of Canada Dry Corporation, J. M. Mathes and P. D. Saylor. By 1930, Canada Dry had introduced several new drinks including Club Soda, Tonic Water, Collins Mix, and fountain syrup. Later in 1986, the world's first soft-drink maker, Cadbury Schweppes, had purchased Canada Dry and Sunkist.
