Menstrual cramps can be debilitating for many women. Untold sick days have been wasted by women the world over who are literally disabled by the pain caused from monthly menstrual cramps. I am one of those women. From middle school through my late twenties I was brought to my knees every month by pain so intense that I wanted to die. I got marginal relief through the use of heating pads and Naproxen Sodium, but I still missed many days of work and school over the years.

One day I read a short article in a monthly newsletter sent by a local Health Food Store that toted the benefits of a B-Complex vitamin supplement on reducing menstrual cramps. The article claimed that the B-Complex supplement included vitamins like B-12 and B-6 that many women are lacking, especially during their menstrual cycles.

Ready to try just about anything to reduce my menstrual cramps I almost immediately went straight to my local drug store to purchase a bottle of B-Complex vitamin supplements. The next morning I added the B-Complex vitamin supplement to my daily dose of vitamins and awaited my next menstrual cycle.

A few weeks later my next menstrual cycle started. Unfortunately I did not notice a reduction in menstrual cramps during the first cycle after starting the B-Complex vitamin supplement. Not to be discouraged I continued to take a B-Complex vitamin supplement every day until my next menstrual cycle.

My second menstrual cycle after starting the B-Complex vitamin was different. For the first time since middle school my menstrual cycle started without the intense cramps that told usually accompanied the start of my menstrual cycle. The cramps did come, but with less intensity and for a shorter time period, the cramps were reduced from more than forty-eight hours to less than twenty-four hours. I have been taking a B-Complex vitamin supplement for over a year now and I have continued to see improvement. My menstrual cramps are now bearable and have been reduced from a debilitating monthly pain to a monthly nuisance.

Takeaways
  • Take a B-Complex vitamin daily
  • Reduce your consumption of salt, sugar, and caffine
  • Increase your intake of calcium rich foods.

regular exercise will help decrease cramps too (or you can go with a total hysterectomy like I did but that is a bit drastic)

I feel your pain Crystal. Thanks for this, better than the docs "take some tylenol and let it pass" fodder
