First let me say that this movie made me sad as an African-American female for not being able to experience the culture of a predominantly African-American college. Looking back at the decision to go a private, small predominantly white college was the choice I made because I knew if I went to a college that was this fun - I would not study! Again I write this review to touch the missed subtext of this film - giving an Africa-American man a since of belonging. "Intelligence and character is the true meaning of an education." Why is that our critic community never seem to understand how the lack of belonging and a scene of pride is the biggest battle African-American men have to wrestle with internally? DJ Williams (Columbus Short) is the epitome of the majority of most African-American men - a man with a need for a second chance and a mentor to help him find his purpose.
I find it unsurprising that not one critic talked about Heritage Hall. Heritage Hall is the foundation of the turning point of this film. Don't get me wrong. The dancing was out of this world and heartfelt for me because I was glad to see all the dancers with section-eight backgrounds like me from the film "Rize" be afforded additional opportunities to demonstrate their gifts in dance. But Heritage Hall created a meaning behind that sense of pride for DJ in the meaning behind the fraternities and sororities. He was able to see up close and personal how people of color in times of adversity can rise in any occasion if they use their personal talents and knowledge of their personal networking circle wisely.
