As a first time mom I know what it is like to want to share the joy and excitement of the culmination of that first year with a baby.   You want to tell the world , " Here's my child! Isn't she beautiful?" as well as, "Here I am, I have made it through this year!".  You want to invite all your friends, all your relatives, heck even that mom you dont get along quite well from your Tuesday mornings play group.  However, beware!  Remember that although your child is turning one she is still a baby and babies do not react quite well to over stimulation with many people over a long period of time.  Below are a few tips that will have you and your baby (and the rest of your guests) all giggles by the end of the day.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION
Chuck-e-Cheese may be a four year old's dream place for a birthday party but not for a one year old.  Nothing against Chuch-e-Cheese but all the great games and exciting sounds that make a kindergardner squeal are really too much stimulation for a baby.  An outdoor park, a church's hall, or a community center are probably more suitable locations since they offer more choice in terms of entertainment because you bring it to the room.  You may say "but I am not that creative!", no worries, see below.

I have a 9 month old and personally, we don't plan on having anything near as "big" as the one suggested. He's not going to remember it, he doesn't have any friends yet (I work from home so no daycare for our little man) and we don't want to waste money on a birthday he will only remember in pictures. So we plan to have a cute celebration with just me, my fiance, my step son and the birthday boy. Cupcakes for everyone, presents that are age-appropriate, and not many decorations. Simple, cute, and small.

Here's a cool first birthday party idea to celebrate your child's birthday in a unique way. Get a customized DVD show made with your child's digital pictures. The video spins a storyline showing your child grow up from a newborn to the first tooth, first smile, first crawl etc and everything is beautifully choreographed to music with special effects and a personalized Happy Birthday song! You can play this show in the birthday party and your guests will love it. This special gift for your child will last a lifetime and will be enjoyed for years to come. The one thing I forgot on our daughter's first birthday was to have party favors for the kids! I felt so bad because I was planning the party more for the adults than the kids of our friends. Kids will ask as it's become a bit of a tradition. We did at least have a pinata for the first birthday party! Those sticks are dangerous -- keep everyone back ten feet!

These are good suggestions for a party for a two or three-year old but are not really relevant for a one year old.

Thank you for the helpful article. I am trying to figure out how to give my soon-to-be 2-year-old daughter a small, easy party in a few weeks here. I'm still not sure exactly what to do, but this article did help me think through some things.
