Brown Spots and Uneven Skin Tone: Olay Definity & the Fight Against Aging

Recently, I caught Olay's new TV commercial for a new line of anti-aging products called Definity. The dermatologist on the commercial said, "For decades, the war against anti-aging has focused mainly on lines and wrinkles. However, a recent study suggests that
there may be a "new wrinkle" in the fight against aging: brown spots, dullness and uneven tone." This caught my attention because lack of facial luminosity and glow along with discoloration can pile on the years. But, what caught my attention next was the barely noticeable fine print on the bottom of the television screen saying something along the lines of, "Fights aging by moisturizing." To me, fine print screams deception or conditions of some kind, so I decided to do a little investigating of my own. My purpose in investigating wasn't to discredit the Olay line, but to figure out why and how this "moisturizing" fights signs of aging, and what it is made up of.

First, I wanted to know how the Olay Definity line works, so I checked out their website. From what I learned, the Definity line, "Helps reverse past damage", and, "Eight weeks later, your skin looks highly defined, luminous, more flawless." Reading into Olay's site more thoroughly, I found that, "Definity's exclusive Essential Glucosamine Complex hydrates intensely" using the main ingredients N-acetyl glucosamine and niacinamide. The site is actually excellent in that it gets into the science of how Definity can improve skin. One section of the site talks about brown spot breakthrough and how, "Definity reduces the appearance of age spots by 78 percent." While this sounded wonderful, yet again, there was fine print that read, "Vs. base moisturizer." Therefore, my preliminary conclusion is that while Olay truly may help decrease the appearance of age spots and uneven tone, it has not been tested against other products offering the same claims, and instead only your basic moisturizer. Armed with knowing the prized ingredients in Olay's Definity line, I conducted a search of my own on its main ingredients.

N-acetyl glucosamine & Niacinamide

Related information
  • Olay Definity's main ingredients are N-acetyl glucosamine and niacinamide, which have proven effectiveness against skin discoloration and signs of aging
  • Glucosamine is made from the tissues of shellfish, while niacinamide is a B-vitamin derivative
  • Products like Olay Definity may also be helpful for hyperpigmentation caused by UV sun damage

I knew it couldn't just be me, I went to the Olay site to find an e-mail address but it seems they make it a little hard to actually SEND the message. So I went to the consultation page and sent my message live, they called me within 5 minutes. I am disapointed in the way I was treated, she asked what I planned to do, when I asked what she meant, she said "well I think I would stop using the product" well no kidding!!! Then she went on to say they would send me coupons for some of their other products. I have pictures documenting the damage caused by this product and today I am meeting with an attorney. ;-(

the same thing happened to me terry! I just used Olay Definity Color recapture foundation and by 6-8hrs later people were asking if i was sunburned because my face looked red... i went to the bathroom and it was starting to get red and blotchy - by the next morning, i had a dry red bumpy rash all over my face and throat where I had applied the product! It's the 4th day now and it's still awful!!! (only slightly better) - i know that this stuff has niacin in it which is used in anti aging products quite often. Niacin is actually something that causes irritation to make you feel like the product is working...it has no real benefit other than causing a slight redness and tingle feeling. They also put it in indoor tanning products to cause a "tingle" and temp. redness that goes away in a few hrs. some people are overly sensitive to it and I guess that's me... I will NEVER use any of these products ever again my face is a complete mess!

have always had great skin, never any blemishes or dry skin etc. As I age I am still told I look 20 + years younger than I am, but when I saw the ad for Olay Definity anti-aging night cream & eye illuminator I decided to give it a try in hopes of taking away the few dark spots that can be seen without makeup. I am horrified at the results!!! My face right now is DRY and has huge red rash spots all over. I am heading to the Dermatologist in hopes of repairing the damage done by this product! I do have pictures and plan to bring this to the attention of the company; Olay!!

Hands Down! The Best Moisturizer I've ever used & I've used quite a few (Drug Store & High End Varieties). I have Combo/Sensitive Prone to Cystic-Acne skin so it has been an overwhelming experience trying to find one that works. I've used Definity for 4 weeks now, I combine it with 4 drops of Tea Tree Oil 2x a day. My breakouts are not as intense & my discoloration due to scarring of past Cystic Acne ( 1 of many adverse reactions I had from my IUD birth control, now removed, that was a nightmare! I GIVE DEFINITY by OLAY 5/5 STARS *****

Your product was not worth the money. Maybe you should make a better less expensive hard to open package. I saw no difference after 8 weeks same wrinkles and same brown spots. The product left my face tacky to the touch at the end of the day. Would not recomend Olay Definity to any one of my friends or family. It was not what I expected in a high price product. I think the other people who had nice things to say about the product did not tell the truth.

Wow! I'm so glad to see that so many others have had positive experiences with Definity! My mom has yet to try it, and I keep trying to convince her that it's GREAT!

I am 72 yrs. old and never used any facial moisturizer or any other preventive or maintenance product. Even being blessed with a fairly decent skin, it needed something by now desperately. I tried Definity. There was a lot to be done. Age spots, lines every where, sags, wrinkles and squints. For decades of neglect it was only miraculous that even though it took a bout 3 months this product changed my appearance so dramatically that I don't need makeup. A little powder and cheek color and sooo many compliments.
