If you are looking to add a puppy to your family, the first thing you need to do is decide which breed has the temperament, characteristics and qualities are the best match for what you offer and desire in your canine companion.

While every puppy is cuddly and lovable, each breed’s total “package” will vary considerably. Before you and your family fall in love with a Boston Terrier puppy just because he has the cutest face you’ve ever seen, it’s wise to find out more about the breed.

Is a Boston Terrier the right breed for you and your family?

The Boston Terrier was bred to be a companion dog, and they do well around children and other pets. They quickly become part of the family, and are happiest when they’re around people. They don’t like to be left to sleep alone in a garage or outside in a doghouse, but because they are a nice, medium size dog, they’re quite comfortable to have in the house. However, because Boston Terriers are “people” dogs that require a lot of time, attention and human contact, they are not for everyone.

Boston Terriers are highly intelligent and learn quickly. Their high-spirited, playful nature does require some basic obedience training though, because without it, they might jump on you and perhaps even give little love nips while playing. The average life span for a Boston Terrier is around 10 to 12 years. They have short hair that will shed, but not much.

Boston Terriers are star athletes

If you are interested in getting an athletic dog that loves to compete and excels at sports, a Boston Terrier is a great choice. They do very well in flyball, tracking events and the obedience ring, and they are exceptional in agility trials. Start training your Boston Terrier puppy early, and watch him sail easily over the jumps, race around the ring, run up and down the planks like a pro, and weave like a champ.

I would like to add that anyone seeking a Boston should ensure that their breeder does health testing such as BAER and CERF testing on their breeding stock and their offspring. Ask for the results and references from their vets. There are too many backyard breeders in this country looking to make a quick buck rather than enhance and better the breed.
