Keeping your children in clothes can get very pricey. It can get really pricey if you have more than one child at home. But there are ways that you can cut the cost down and still keep your child or children in clothes.

Hand-Me-Downs

If you have more than one child this can work out pretty well for you. There are ways for you to do hand-me-downs right. First off if the article of clothing in question has stains or holes in it, do not give it to the next child in line. Your younger child should not be made to wear clothes that are in this kind of condition. Also hand-me-downs do not have to go from the older child to the younger child. I have found this one out when one of my sons started wearing bigger sizes than his older brother. So we reversed the hand-me-down process. When my son who was 3 at the time out grew his clothes the good ones went to his 4-½ year old brother. Also to prevent jealousy you still need to buy the child receiving the hand-me-downs some outfits of his or her own. If done right though this can be a great way to reduce some of the expenses of buying clothes for your children.

Clearance Sales

This works great no matter how many children you have. Hit the clearance racks and purchase items that your child or children need. Do not buy winter clothes that go on clearance at the start of spring and summer for the next winter season though. Reason why you do not want to do this is you do not know how your child is going to grow over the summer. You might wind up with clothes that are two small cause your child had a growth spurt If you bought these items big to account for any growing then you might have clothes that are to big cause your child did not grow any. So check the clearance racks close to the season you are buying for so that you know it will fit your child. Also check the clothes out to make sure there is nothing wrong with them. Some clothes hit the clearance racks cause of broken zippers, missing buttons or stains and holes.

Resale Shops

Takeaways
  • Hit the clearance racks and purchase items that your child or children need.
  • Resale shops are a great way to get clothes for your child.
  • Socks, underwear and shoes should never be purchased used.

I have two boys that can wear the same size depending on how they are made. So what they do is share them. One kid may wear something on day and a couple days later I see my other son wearing the same outfit. lol. But that is something that they had come up with between the two of them so I let them do it. Just told them that if there is any fighting I will put a stop to it though. So now when I shop if it is something that they can both fit into I buy two things that they both can wear and tell them that I bought them both two new outfits.

Great tips! I have 3 young boys and it seems we're always moving into new sizes. I have clothing out ranging from boy's size 8 to 2T. The only size not in use is 4T! LOL :)

Some of these suggestions can work for teenagers as well. There are now a lot of buy-sell-trade stores where you can take current styles of clothing that your 14-17 year old has outgrown and sell them or trade them in for new outfits. Two national chains I know of are Crossroads Trading Company and Buffalo Exchange. They buy vintage clothes or current styles. They generally prefer things to be in season, in good condition, and they love brand names and designer clothes.
