Top True Crime Television Shows
The truth is that, no matter how many times they deny it, police officers watch crime shows on television. True, most of the men in blue don't get into the pseudo-realistic drams like "CSI" where forensic results are almost immediate. (In the real world, you're doing well if you get a lab report back in three months.) When you're talking about the bulging genre of true crime shows, documentaries told with the drama of a good mystery novel, you're likely to find the entire Fraternal Order of Police chapter turning in. A quick poll of the many law enforcement officers I'm pleased to call friend revealed the following shows as the "Top Five" among crime shows as rated by crime fighters.

5. Cold Case Files
This is a classic from A and E. In its one-hour format, the show's producers profile three or four cold cases that have been solved, often twenty or thirty years after the crime was committed. One memorable case is the story of two siblings growing up in Brooklyn who vaguely remember having a little sister. They have little evidence, but they do have a police officer who will listen. They were also blessed with a very stupid mother who had hid the corpse of their sister in the closet for twenty years. Of all the true crime shows on television now, this one is the most motivational one for police officers. Through the variety of cases solved and methods used, the show gives up to every cold case desk. It airs at 6 p.m. EST.

Takeaways
  • 1. Police officers like realistic, gritty dramas.
  • 2. A new breed of documentaries help keep law enforcement officers up-to-date on the rapidly changin
  • 3. These television shows can even offer a "big picture" view on your current case fact.
Did You Know?
While the forensic scientists on CSI get DNA results back in no more than 24 hours, results come in much slower in real police officers. Depending on the backlog, results on a blood sample could take three-six months.

Hmmm - mebbe i too better write an article about the cops shows i watch LOL. Unfortunately all those shows you mention are not all available here in Australia. I watch cop shows for different reasons - some for drama and some to 'solve' but i like drama ones that are based on the latest knowledge of crime trends and on perpetrator and victim behaviour. Crimestoppers here in aus does not offer rewards and here also police and prison workers - and perhaps too any other professionals who may have come into contact with criminals featured in crimes ma also be ineligable for rewards - so are you sure it is true that in US they can receive rewards? in fact here once a criminal is shown on crimestoppers they tend to give themselves up as, as they say - they are now history (i work in prisons).

Yeah, I have to admit, I live those shows every day so sadly, I have never seen any of them. My wife watches them though. I like NCIS, and Law & Order, Criminal Intent. I like how the L & O CI cast always know everything about everything... I hate shows like CSI because it really gives the lay person a distorted view of how crimes are solved, and in some ways, makes the criminals smarter. Prosecutors now have to address the CSI issue in court. Kind of "Dummying" up the jury so that they don't expect what they see in the court room will be the same as CSI.

I don't watch many of these, but it's interesting to see what aspects make them realistic or worth watching. I got a kick out of watching "America's Most Wanted" for the potential rewards. Still, those call-in numbers do work. Oprah has also caught child molesters this way, which I think is great. If ony "America's Most Wanted" were as popular as "Oprah."

These are true story shows. But, I left out one fictional show that every police officer I know loves...Reno 911!

I enjoy watching Cold Case Files on A&E. I haven't seen a lot of the others, though. I have to admit, too, that even though I know deep down inside that they are totally unrealistic, I'm hooked on all of the Law & Order, CSI, Cold Case (on CBS), Bones, Crossing Jordan, etc. shows as well....
