Located in the heart of central Kentucky, Hodgenville is a small town located about 60 miles south of Louisville. At first glance, the rural farm community doesn't seem to have much to offer. Upon further investigation, however, you will discover that Hodgenville is worth a second look.Once called Hodgen's Mill, Hodgenville has one major boast: a national historic site. Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace National Historic Site is located in Hodgenville, the site of Lincoln's birth, and where he spent his first several years of life. The area is in a park-like setting and features a replica log cabin, a natural sinking spring, the stump of the famed Boundary Oak, a visitor center, and a gift shop. Visit http://www.nps.gov/abli/ for additional information from the National Park Service.
In addition to the national historic site, more Abraham Lincoln attractions are available in the downtown square of Hodgenville. A statue of Lincoln sits proudly in the middle of the square, and a museum about Lincoln's life contains wax figures, authentic artifacts, and historical interpretations. The Lincoln Museum is the only museum that exists exclusively for Abraham Lincoln's life and times.
If you are looking for some entertainment, the regionally known Lincoln Jamboree is the place to be. On Saturday nights, owner Joel Ray Sprowles and his cast of interesting characters bring about a live show complete with music (mostly country) and comedy. The "hee-haw-esque" show has been running every Saturday night for more than 50 years. Come early and enjoy some great country cooking at a great price before the show starts. And make sure to take some time to check out Joel Ray's lobby full of memorabilia that he has collected over the years. Items range from signed music star photographs to Elvis Presley style jumpsuits.
