Children in today's society are growing up quicker. It seems that every child out there craves to be an adult. Their curiosity causes them to try adult activities at a young age. Many more children are experimenting with alcohol and drugs at even younger ages. Political figures have created and updated several programs to help provide children with more information on both alcohol and drugs. Meanwhile, those same politicians continue to ignore the outdated information that is being taught on the subject of sex. With children wanting to become adults at an alarmingly quick rate, sex becomes an option that far too many children know too little about.

My early childhood presented me with issues of should I or should I not. I was like any other kid. Curisoity was both my friend and enemy. I always wanted to try new things to see how they were. If it was not for programs like D.A.R.E. or MADD, I may of tried drugs and alcohol. I personally feel that both of those programs helped me avoid those bad things. One thing I noticed though is that my sexual education was lacking. I took sexual education in middle school, but they only taught you the basics. All I learned was the names for body parts and that there were sexually transmitted diseases out there. The act of sex was also taught to me on several occasions. However, my wonderment about the subject made me want to learn more.

I ended up having sex at a very young age. When I look back on the situation and realize how stupid I was, I wish I could rewind time. My education was not enough. The teachers and politicians did not do enough to prepare me for the subject matter. They still are not doing enough to prepare our children to deal with such an important issue. More and more kids are having sex at earlier ages. Children are becoming pregnant even before they reach the age twelve. What does this say about our youth? That they are naive and stupid? No. All of these issues happening tells us that we are not educating the youth properly. It is time that we made some changes.

I couldn't agree with you more. I was a teenage mother (I was so happy when I turned 20 and couldn't be called that any more) and while I was pregnant I attended an alternative school for pregnant girls. I say girls instead of teenagers because there were two pre-teen girls there. They were both age 12 by the time they had their babies (One of them had just turned it so she actually became pregnant at 11). One of the girl's boyfriends (who was in his 20's!!) had told her she couldn't get pregnant the first time so she didn't need to worry about it. She didn't know any better and learned the hard way. I totally felt like both her parents and the school system had completely failed her.

IMHO, every parent (and educators) need to take the time to make sure our kids are well informed...it's not just about babies any more, it's about lives.
