Questions to Consider when Hiring a Contractor

If you've decided to take on a home improvement task that is beyond your abilities or you simply do not have the time to do it, you are going to have to hire out to have it done. Selecting the right contractor for the job can mean the difference between having a project done efficiently to your specifications and having a project that becomes a nightmare. The following questions are good examples of things you should ask each contractor you are considering hiring to do your job.
How long have you been in business? Try to hire a company that is well established with few records of consumer complaints. You can check with consumer protection officials to find out what complaints, and of what nature, a particular contractor may have filed against them. On thing to keep in mind is that if a particular contractor has no complaints filed against them, it doesn't necessarily mean they have had no problems. It could be that the problems have not been reported.
Are you licensed and registered with the state? Not all states in the United States require contractors to be licensed, however, 36 states have some type of licensing and registration statutes that affect contractors and remodelors or specialty contractors.
What types of insurance do you carry? All contractors should have current insurance coverage for property damage, personal liability and worker's compensation. Ask to see documented proof and copies of their insurance certificates. It's best to avoid contractors without insurance as you may end up being liable for injuries and damages that may occur at your project site.
Will my project require a permit? For most building projects in most states and municipalities a permit of some type will most likely be required. Competent contractors will know about and procure any such permits you may need to have. If the contractor you are questioning asks you to obtain the permits it should be a red flag.
