If one thing was made very clear by the actions of big oil in the summer and fall of 2005, it was that they have succeeded in making themselves alot of money. Billions of dollars. Exxon Mobil by itself made almost 10 billion in the third quarter, the most by any corporation in any industry in all of history. The other major oil companies were not far behind.

Why then? Whywere profits so huge in the third quarter? Was it because there was suddenly a leap forward in the production process that meant it cost less toproduce it? Was it because they sold alot more of it? Or was it because they took advantage of short term shortages caused by supply disruption to ramrod the prices as high as they could? Iam leaning toward the latter. They saw an opportunity to maketruckloads of money with little chance of repercussions. "What the market will bear" as they say.

The oil industry isn't to blame for high prices. That said, they certainly do profit from them.

Lower gas prices if you want to see a better economy. Now it seems that we are only working to put fuel in our tanks just to stay working and to put food on the tables. What if we can't take that bus or car pool because of distance. What if there are no buses in our towns. What if we can't move into town because of the housing market slump. What if your distance into town is two far for even the bike.

I don't for even a second believe that figure, Jeremiah- That some of their profits come from the rape of other countries too doesn't make them any better, regardless...

If Exxon Mobile is so evil, and ready to gouge the American people, then why did only 27% of their profit for the 2005 fiscal year (which ended in October by the way) come from the US? That leaves 73%, or by my math almost 3/4 our their profits come from other countries. Left that little tid-bit out did ya?

Oil companies like Exxon making profit from hurricanes should be punishable by death. The oil industry sees record profits while the rest of us struggle to make ends meet. :(
