Best Free Places in Chicago
Some of the best and most memorable things to do in Chicago are free. The following are my favorite free places to visit in Chicago all year round.
Lincoln Park Zoo
I am amazed at how many people do not know about the city of Chicago's free zoo. Lincoln Park Zoo is located in the heart of Chicago and conveniently within walking distance of the lakefront and many other attractions. Open everyday of the year, and always free
the zoo has several outdoor and indoor exhibits so you can visit comfortably all year round. In addition to the free admission the zoo hosts several lectures, discussions and presentations open to the public for free, as well as story times and seasonal activities for children.
Garfield Park Conservatory
One of the largest conservatories in the country, Garfield Park Conservatory is operated in part by the Chicago Park District and is free to the public. This huge garden in the city is open year round and in the winter is a breath of fresh air for those who cannot wait for spring. Free educational programs for children and parents are offered almost daily, there is even a yoga class offered with free admission for children under 15. In the summer the grounds surrounding the conservatory spring to life, be sure to make a special visit to the Monet Garden which is modeled after the artist's garden in Giverney, France.
The Art Institute of Chicago
Home to one of the best collections in the country the Art Institute is available to all for free. Every Thursday throughout the year the Art Institute has free admission from 5 to 8 pm. While browsing the many collections you might just come across an artist station where volunteers will provide you with free drawing materials and a seat, take the time to create some art of your own. The Kraft Education Center always has free projects and activities for the youngest members of the family to enjoy. To supplement the exhibitions there are several related musical events held in the auditorium, many of which are free.
