I started watching The View when it first debuted. The idea of women sitting on a panel while they dished about everything from hairstyles to the current political problems intrigued me. The original co-hosts at the time were Barbara Walters, Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, and Debbie Matenopoulos. Joy Behar pitched in, showing up on stage whenever Barbara wasn't present until the show's producers, including Ms. Walters, added Joy permanently to the mix. They were a great collaboration of cultural and political differences as well as differences in age and lifestyles. I couldn't wait to rush home to watch the show every day.

That's when co-hosts started leaving.

Although not a big fan of the gregarious Ms. Matenopoulos, I wondered why her contract wasn't renewed. As far as I could tell, she had a good rapport with the audience and lent a refreshing air to the program. Her replacement, Lisa Ling, managed to mesh with the remaining original four hosts and soon became someone the viewers could count on for objective, yet empathic reporting.

But the changes kept coming.

From the beginning, I could tell Lisa's heart was in real reporting and not in talking about the latest fashion or the best gadget for techies. Therefore, I wasn't surprised when the producers announced she would be leaving to work with the National Geographic channel. I was a bit saddened, but I knew she'd soon be replaced.

Yet another co-host was coming on stage.

By now, however, my interest in the show was waning. Everything seemed to be a rehash of previous seasons, and the show just simply wasn't as entertaining as it once had been. I still enjoyed watching the women discuss controversial subjects, but I no longer rushed home to see it. In fact, I began forgetting to tape the show.

Takeaways
  • The View's co-hosts have come and gone, but no one's like Rosie.
Did You Know?
Whether you agree with Rosie or not, she makes The View entertaining again.

I so agree, Jean. I liked Star until she started losing weight and acting all high and mighty. But it was her declining ratings that got her booted from the show. Thanks for commenting.

Elizabeth holds her own just fine with the rest of them, and I'm sure she gets her talking points directly from the Republican party. I've never seen her cry either, except maybe if she was laughing too hard at Joy or Rosie. Rosie's role is the anchor seat, just like Meredith had. I'm sure if Elizabeth or Joy had wanted that role---which is different than being a regular co-host---I'm sure they would have been moved up to it after Star left. For me, I'll take Rosie over Star any day.

Oh, and by the way, thanks for commenting!

Additionally, Rosie may be killing the show for you...but the ratings say others like her.

I do agree with you on one thing. Rosie does seem to control the show - which I assume is Barbara's decision - and Elisabeth is the odd-man-out. But do you remember when the nation was on a "support Bush no matter what" trend? Elisabeth was riding high then and having a good time spouting her political beliefs. Now the tide has turned with most of the nation no longer supporting Bush, so her political views are not the view of most of the nation or the audience. I've never seen Elisabeth moved to tears; but I'll start watching. I can't see Barbara allowing that. As I said, I do think Rosie and the rest get a little heavy-handed at times, but it's a sort of payback, I think.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Rosie is KILLING the show. It is sad that Elizabeth has been moved to tears several times simply for her political view point. How much more biased could you get?
