Caribbean Series. Castilla played first base for his home country in the annual tournament. He decided that getting a victory for his homeland was the perfect way to say goodbye to the game of baseball.

"I knew it was my last game, but I got emotional when I came to the park and all my teammates came to congratulate me," the 39-year old slugger said while trying to hold back tears after the game. You could tell that the decision was something he had thought long and hard about. The emotion in him could not be held back from pouring out.

"When the players from the other countries hugged me after the game, I couldn't hold back the tears. I felt very emotional and proud for all my accomplishment."

Vinny Castilla has had the type of career that many people dream of. Castilla retired from Major League Baseball with a career batting average of .276. He played nine of his sixteen seasons for the Colorado Rockies. One of the best first basemen of this generation, Castilla had some of his best seasons with the Rockies. He had a stretch of four straight seasons in which he averaged 30 home runs and 100 runs batted in. He was always gracious and polite and a true joy to watch the game of baseball.

Castilla also retires as Mexico's all-time leading home run hitter in the major leagues. Vinny hit 320 home runs for six different major league teams. He will always be remembered as the heart of the Mexico National baseball team. Castilla understands that the game of baseball presented him with many opportunities that are usually never reached by residents of Mexico.

You will be able to see Castilla in some form next season. He has announced that he will be the special assistant to Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd. His goal is to eventually coach in the major leagues and earn a general manager position.
