Buying a Used Laptop Computer

Everybody likes getting a good bargain on expensive items. But, are there things that you should never purchase used? High-tech items are one of the most controversial items when it comes to buying used vs. new. Among the items is laptop computers.

Of course, you hear the horror stories of someone buying a used laptop from a classified ad, eBay or Craigslist. Often times, the computer works fine for a week and then it dies on them. The money they spent on the laptop is forever gone because the seller changed his phone number or moved away. However, many people have successfully purchased a used laptop and have never had a problem. I am one of those people. We purchased our laptop from a computer show that came to our local coliseum complex a few years ago. We have never had any trouble with it.

Are there questions you should ask before you buy a used laptop computer from a private individual? Of course there are! Ask the seller why they are selling the computer. Often times, people sell old laptop computers when they are getting a new one of their own. Find out if the computer is in working condition or if it needs repairs. You will want to know how much internal memory the computer has and if the laptop has ever had any type of virus. Sometimes, the seller will allow you to give the laptop a "trial run" before purchasing it. Ask the seller for a warranty. Most sellers will agree upon a 90 day warranty. If the seller is reluctant to offer a warranty, that could be a red flag.

Generally, you can look over the laptop and tell if it has suffered abuse. If the case is not cracked, it most likely has not seen much abuse. If the motherboard is broken, steer clear. If the hard drive goes out, it can be easily replaced. A broken LCD can also be fixed if you are mechanically inclined and have a replacement part. Broken keyboards can be replaced inexpensively.

Refurbished laptop computers can be a good buy. If you are purchasing a refurbished laptop, make sure that it is sold with a warranty. The warranties are usually only 90 day warranties, which is not very comforting since they often cost more than going through a private individual.
