Nicknamed " The Father of Black History," Dr. Carter G. Woodson was diligent in his work to record the history of African Americans. Beginning his life from a large poor family, he sporadically attended school because his help was mostly needed on the farm, so he self taught himself and eventually attended Berea College out of Kentucky. Born the son of slaves James and Eliza Woodson out of New Canton, Virginia. The author of more than thirty books, including his most popular novel "The Mis-Education of The Negro" published in 1933, that is still relevant today, Dr. Woodson stated that;

"When you control a man's thinking you do not have to worry about his actions. You do not have to tell him not to stand here or go yonder. He will find his 'proper place' and will stay in it. You do not need to send him to the back door. He will go without being told. In fact, if there is no back door, he will cut one for his special benefit. His education makes it necessary."

With over one hundred articles written and 125 reviews, the founder of the publication Journal of Negro History that still exist today, Dr. Woodson was also a member of the Niagara Movement and also a weekly columnist for Marcus Garvey's publication, "Negro World". He ultimately obtained a B.A in history at the University of Chicago in 1907. Attending Sorbonne University in Paris where he became affluent in French in1908. As if that wasn't enough, he also received a Ph.D. in History from Harvard University in 1912, becoming only the second African-American to earn such a degree.
