Purchasing children's furniture can be expensive, and yet quite necessary. Kids need smaller sized furniture that is rugged and has a lot of storage for toys and games. The perfect solution for a kid's bed or playroom is a handy storage table constructed with sturdy plastic crates.

Materials Needed

1. Eight cube shaped plastic stackable crates
2. Plastic zip strip ties
3. Small eye bolts
4. A square of round piece of sanded plywood
5. Paint and brushes

Constructing the Table Base

The first step in creating the base of the kid's storage table is stacking the crates in the correct fashion. You must start with one crate stacked on top of another with their openings facing the same way. Attach the two through the top and bottom with the zip strip ties. Cut off any excess tie.

Repeat this step with the three other sets of two plastic crates. Make sure that the crates are sitting firmly atop each other and use the zip ties to attach them so that they cannot shift position.

After you have the four sets of stacked plastic crates, you must attach them to each other. There are two ways to do this. You can put the crate openings on two opposite sides of the table base and attach them all together. You can also arrange the crate pairs so that there is one set of openings on each side. The method is up to you and depends on how the kid's room is laid out and your intended use for the table.

Making the Table Top

After the base is constructed, you will want to create the tabletop. To do this, you should use a well sanded square or circle of half inch plywood or other thin but sturdy wood material. Give the wood a coat of white primer paint to seal it and then paint or decorate the table top in any manner that you like. Finishing it with a protective sealant coat is a great idea for this kid's furniture.

To attach the tabletop to the plastic crate base, simply screw the small eyebolts into the underside of the table near the center of each plastic crate stack. Use a zip tie strip to attach the crates to the tabletop.
