Associated Content Writers have wondered for a while now whether social book marking and keyword density really led to more page views. Apparently the Content Managers' word wasn't good enough the Content Producers just wouldn't know for themselves until we had some kind of page viewer to see just how many hits each piece of content garnered. Well finally after a long wait the page viewer has arrived so it's time to find out does the social book marking and keyword density really work?

When I first started at Associated Content I did everything I was told to do. I was told you should use social bookmarks so I did. I was told you should try and use keyword density so I did. I was told to leap off a bridge so I did. Eventually I decided not to do it anymore. I wasn't seeing social book marking and keyword density affect my offers and let's be real here, social book marking and keyword density take time. It takes some time to go to all those different social book marking sites and entering all your content. It takes time to see if your keyword density is high because afterwards you might have to edit your content a lot. It also takes time jumping off bridges, although it wasn't so much the jumping but the recovery time. Anyway, my early articles I used social book marking and keyword density and my more recent articles I did not. Now that we have page views I've looked over my content and I see a major difference.

Let's take at look at my ten pieces of content that have gotten the most page views so that we can see the difference in page views (and also so I can get a cheap plug for some of my articles).

1. *$College Football Rivalry Trophies - 4,044 page views
2. *$History of the Florida Gators Football Team - 2,943
3. *$The Best Rivalry in College Football - 2,764
4. *$History of the Alabama Crimson Tide Football Team - 2,586
5. *$Why Bo Jackson is the Best Athlete Ever - 2,393
6. *$Who is the 2006 American League MVP - 2,384
7. *$Kurt Angle Signs with TNA - 2,309
8. *$History of the Auburn Tiger Football Team - 2,137
9. #Life as a Walmart Employee - 2,135
10. #White Elephant Gift Ideas - 1,705

* - Social bookmarked
$ - Keyword Density
# - Featured Content

Takeaways
  • My top 8 pieces of content with the most page views all used social book marking and keyword density
  • My Tom Cruise article wasn't in the top 10 and didn't use social book marking and keyword density.
  • My football articles with social book marking and keyword density got more views than the others.

Great information and worth investigating.

I rarely bookmark, but I did on a few recent article just to see if I could see a difference. I am working on my keyword density, but there are just some articles where keyword density just does not work. However, I have seen slightly higher offers on those articles where the keyword density fit nicely in the article without it seeming to be keyword heavy. I wish I knew more about how AC decides on payment, because I have gotten some odd offers...

Thanks for this article, Lee. I've been wondering how effective social bookmarking is. But, you really did make a difference with this piece. Recently, I noticed that an article that I didn't remember marketing did really well compared to similar articles I wrote. It was during the Top Ten Songs special and I did a piece on Selena. I kept wondering how it was that I have over 700 hits on this article when I didn't send it to friends or anything. But, I forgot that I did click to Furl it. That MUST be the reason it got more hits than my other music reviews. And, I thought it was a waste of time to Furl my articles!

Nice article. I can say that sports seems to be popular. My biggest views by far are my football articles. I don't do the bookmarking but I do try to get the keywords right at least when I am not rushing to finish.

My suggestion: In the Bookmark this Page box, click on the Read more--> and wait for the page FULL of social bookmarking sites to pop up. Then go to town. Once you set up an account at each one, it's pretty easy after that. I do have to say, however, one of the sites recently put out a warning to self-promoters. I'm not really sure what to think of that and I can't remember the name of the place right now. Sorry. Either way, Good Luck to everyone!

I have been kicking all this around in my head for weeks now and I think I finally see the light. I do the social bookmarking, but I have not been working on my keyword density. It's definitely time to do both and much more thoroughly. Thanks for a great article. Nothing is more powerful than seeing the facts in black and white. Great job!

I am trying to see how well the bookmarking works as well.I spent the last few days bookmarking everywhere I could so I'll see the next time the page views are updated if it made a difference.Great article Lee!

Thanks for sharing your results. I don't care for Digg - my stuff doesn't fit them and I agree that they are not friendly. I tend to think bookmarking with Yahoo, Netscape, and Newsvine works for me. At least when I Google my content, bookmarked articles on Yahoo and Netscape do pop up on the first and second pages.

The only true way to tell would be to write some articles and not use key desity, write again and not use bookmarks, write again and use both, write again and not use any. The real question is, can we afford not to try these out? I promote my articles as best as I can, but this takes a lot of time and I could be using the time writing more articles. You did an awesome job writing this article and good luck if you happen to do any experiments on this.

Excellent article. I have seen similar results with my content. Thanks for the heads up!

I would bookmark myself silly if I only knew the right places for my stuff. I quit bookmarking at Digg, they dont' even have categories I can use and are NOT friendly, Furl's PVs are minimal, I can't tell PVs at del.icio.us - the only place I have any luck is Netscape and that's just because I've made myself a part of the site by viewing and rating others. I'm not sure why AC seems to promote Digg so much, I wish they would give a few ideas about other bookmarking sites(for the un-young and un-hip like myself :-) Interesting article though, thanks.

I've been going through my mid-AC crisis lately and was wondering if all the social bookmarking was paying off. Now that someone else agrees that it does, I'll keep doing it! :) Good article!
