If war with Iran is to occur it seems that the war would have something that the war in Iraq was missing. A future war in Iran may have justification. On Friday Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced that serial numbers found on explosives used by Iraqi extremists may be linked to Iran. The Bush administration has been shoving the possibility of Iran being involved in the Iraqi war to the public for some time. The administration may have learned that they need more solid evidence to start a war. They may now have that evidence.
According to the Associated Press Gates told reporters that the explosives are considered "pretty good" evidence. Gates was quoted as saying, "I think there's some serial numbers, there may be some markings on some of the projectile fragments that we found."
With the war in Iraq approaching four years, and with over 3,000 United States soldiers dead, one thing for sure is that the Bush administration better build a better case if they feel it is necessary to start another war. Starting a third war while still fighting two unfinished wars would stretch our military to the absolute limit.
Many political analysts view the potential war with Iran as a way for Bush to avoid the Iraq problem. It would be much more difficult for politicians in Washington to object to war with Iran than to bring our soldiers back from a failed war in Iraq.
Another factor in this scenario is Afghanistan. The current situation in Afghanistan can be debated. It can not be debated that this war in Afghanistan is not going the way the administration had hoped. If the Bush administration had not prematurely invaded Iraq the situation in Afghanistan would at this time be much better. The Taliban are still fighting our soldiers in Afghanistan, and they do not seem to be letting up. Afghanistan was our first failed war under the Bush administration. If Iraq had not occurred and the war in Afghanistan was going as it is today, there would be much more attention and outrage focused at the Bush administration's failed war strategy in Afghanistan.
