Our bodies begin to break down and wear out with age and decreased physical activity. Hormonal changes, loss of muscle tone, illness and disability can all affect our desire to have sexual relations.
We are probably all familiar with the phrase, "use it or lose it". These words can be applied to us as we age and our bodies change. Our muscles atrophy when they are not used and that includes our sexual muscles. Atrophy does occur naturally with age, causing vaginal dryness and loss of elasticity. This starts the vicious cycle of loss of sexual interest because, while sex can improve vaginal atrophy, intercourse can be painful under these conditions. Loss of interest in sex then occurs and prevents the very thing that could be helping us improve the situation.
Good communication and trust in your sexual partner can do miracles here. A conversation about the issue can bring much to light and let your partner in on how they can help make sex more comfortable for you. An open-mindedness about the use of lubricants, stimulation needs and how gentle they should be during intercourse will do much to improve the situation and make sex more enjoyable during this time.
A good healthy attitude about sex allows us to communicate and converse with our partner on sensitive issues that affect both of our erotic experiences. At a time in our lives where things may not always work correctly, it is imperative that we be capable of discussing these delicate topics with our significant other. And as you expect sensitivity to women's issues, you should make yourself aware of the men's side as well. Having both sides represented will allow you to create a feasible plan of attack.
