The Best Places for Alternative Comics in Milwaukee

Having just moved here to Milwaukee and being something of a comic book hound I was interested in finding the best places in the area to get my regular comics “fix”. My interest is primarily in the realm of alternative and underground comix (Love and Rockets, Zap, RAW, Eightball, etc) so keep that in mind when evaluating my opinions on the following stores. I now live in the West Allis area and these were the first four shops I encountered in my neighborhood.

Lost World of Wonders is located at 6913 West Oklahoma Avenue and is definitely the most impressively diverse comic shop in the city. A big rack in the back displays all the new books for the week. Ample rack space throughout the store displays the most recent issues of all titles still in stock. There is also a huge selection of trade paperback books on one side of the store. Graphic novels are displayed alphabetically but split into sections. Marvel and DC each get their own section, mostly because it has been ingrained in comics collectors for too many years that those are the only two companies that “matter”. Everything else is grouped together in a third section. The other side of the store is almost entirely devoted to Manga and Anime… with T-shirts, posters, games, movies, CDs and, oh yes, comics of interest to fans of Asian culture. The store tries hard to appeal to every possible kind of comic reader but seems to have a slight bias towards popular genre titles.
