I believe in telling the truth. I don't like it when someone lies to me. I especially do not like it when my partner, my husband lies to me. It hurts me deeply.

But when you really begin to think about the act of lying and all the acts of it, it becomes a very complex thought. At first, it sounds easy. It is black and white. Lying is wrong. Case close.

If you ask your spouse where he/she has been, you want a truthful answer. Now lets take this same question. Lets suppose that he/she is planning a romantic night for you. If he/she tells you the truth, the night and all the plans will be ruin. You could say he/she doesn't have to lie. He/she could say I would rather not answer now, but you will soon see. Sounds like a simple solution until your imagination gets the better of you. If you are a secure person in your relationship, then you won't think the worse that he/she is cheating. That is good. But what will you think? Is he/she sick? Is something wrong with one of our friends, family members or is he starting a new job? The list and the equations of where and what he/she has been doing can be endless and you could go stark raving mad in the process. Is lying for this reason, wrong?

Okay, now lets conquer those age old questions and try to decide what does a guy say when we ask do we look fat in this, does this new hair style flatter me, how do you like my new dress? Do they tell the truth? Yes, you quickly say. You want to hear the truth or you wouldn't have asked the question in the first place. It is ten minutes before a special event and you want your guy to tell you that your new hair style is all wrong for you? Now who is lying?

I know you are probably thinking those types of lies are okay. Now that you start defending lies when do you know when to stop? What about the money issue? How truthful are you on this hot subject?

Takeaways
  • Is it wrong when somebody says you look good when you don't?
  • Is lying by omission wrong?
  • Do you always tell the truth when it comes to money?

Yes, we do. But it is those gray shades that makes life interesting don't you think?

Good article - and great points. We live in a "many shades of gray" world.

Thanks. It is those gray areas of lying that throws a lot of good people, I think.

I think you brought up some great points here-there are many forms of "lying."
